CASH ONLY. This is your standard traditional American Chinese restaurant. I liked the open kitchen concept idea, where you could hear the chef stir frying the food with the tong hammering the wok above high heat. It did make the dining room hot in summer. Waiting time could be a problem when getting busy as it had only one chef, so call in ahead or plan to wait fifteen minutes or more. Special combo (all day) was $8.15+tax. Food was hot and fresh. My Kung Pao Chicken was more like a chicken stir fry with a spicy brown sauce, but it was at least tasty and chicken was tender. Egg roll was tasty as well: crispy outside and steamy inside. Fried rice was way above average too. I liked that slightly burnt flavor from the rice being stir fried on high heat in a wok. Lady at front might look unamused or happy, but she was friendly; just a bit introvert I guess.

I wished I lived in Newton, because I’d eat here A LOT! I ordered the chicken mei fun ( rice noodle). This was some of the best Chinese food I’ve ever had, from the melt in your mouth/tender chicken to the exceptional flavoring and spice. Highly highly highly recommend!

If I could rate negative stars, I would, but I'm giving credit for the food being hot, even if most of it was terrible.

This was some of the worst Chinese food I have ever purchased.

First, even after saying I was traveling and asking for chopsticks and napkins (no dine in, despite the posted info), no chopsticks or plastic cutlery or napkins were in the bag. I had to drive back to get those.

Second, the menu on line is NOT their menu, so my wife had to order otherwise. Her shrimp was old and/or overcooked and mealy - that went in the trash. The orange beef (which I have had other places and very much enjoy) was a soggy mess and inedible, and the two pieces of broccoli in the dish had long-since seen better days - soggy and old also - all that joined the shrimp in the trash. My egg drop soup was good, but when I order a bowl of "Egg drop and Wonton" soup, I really would like to see more than one wonton in my bowl of soup - I wouldn't have paid extra for a single wonton, had I known.

The steamed potstickers were good, but China King only gave us a teaspoon of sauce - this was for an order of six wontons - so the ONE I ate with sauce was good, the rest had no sauce, so that disappointed as well. How cheap can you possibly be???

We will definitely NOT be back. Maybe if you're local and only want (cheaply made) soup, this would be OK. Do NOT order anything that's supposed to be breaded and fried, and do NOT order anything with shrimp or broccoli and don't bother with the potstickers unless you have sauce for...

I went to China King in Newton, IA for the first time this evening. I came in and ordered a few entrees, krab ragoons, dumplings, and a shrimp egg roll. The ordering process was super easy. They had the menus at the front for you to look at and it was easy to read and understand.

When I went to pay, I was told it was cash only, which was totally fine. They started making my food while I went and grabbed cash from the Casey’s ATM next door. Came back and it was pretty much done. Super quick service and the lady at the front was super nice.

Got home and when I tell you this is the best Chinese food I’ve ever had, I mean it. The entrees were packed with flavor and the krab ragoons just melted in your mouth. Perfect amount of stuffing in both the krab ragoons and dumplings.

1,000,000,000% recommend everyone try it out at least once. My only criticism is the cash only (which honestly was t even a big problem) and that they’re not...

My wife picked up some General Tso, Lo Mein and an egg roll for me. The total according to their website was to be $11.80 plus tax. I was in the state of shock when my wife came home and told me my meal was $16.75 after tax ($15.65 pre tax.). I bit my tongue and started eating this tough, rubbery, dark meat stuff. I am not certain where are all of the high reviews came from in the past, but I am certain the past customers must have been at some other restaurant, or quite possibly were there when there was an experienced cook working. I guess I will start driving out of town for Panda Express. At least I can count on food that is more consistent and the meat is more identifiable. It is has been years since I darkened China King’s doorway, and it very well may be my last. (The Lo Mein was good, the only thing that brought the score up to 2 stars, but still not worth the money.)

Overpriced and awful pretty...
