Zack Garvin’s — Restaurant in Newton

Short version of my review.... save you money! Do not waste your time waiting and getting low end steaks for high prices!!!!

Long version: After waiting for over an hour, after being told the wait was 45 mins, we were finally taken to our table. Upon entering the dining room, we noticed at least 5 empty tables. Mind you, these tables were not empty for social distancing, as the table we sat at had people not even 2’ from us on 3 sides. (The 4th side was a wall.) Once we were finally sat our waitress, Hannah, greeted us. After asking how we were, she went on to tell us that she was missing her brothers wedding party. No big deal, if she wouldn’t have rushed us through ordering. She took our drink order and asked if we were ready to order, no big deal as this is normal. We provided our drink order and appetizers, then asked for a few minutes to order. She was quick to bring our drinks, then asked again if we were ready to order, again this is normal. We placed our order, where we ordered 2 prime ribs, 14oz ribeye, and the 9oz filet. She asked the person who ordered the filet if she wanted the filet chef’s feature, but did not explain what the special entailed. We all ordered baked and sweet potatoes. About 5 mins after ordering, Hannah comes back to inform us they are out of bread. Another few minutes goes by and Hannah comes with bread. She then stated they are out of baked and sweet potatoes. Naturally, we asked what other sides they have, but Hannah had no idea and just stood there awkwardly. So we asked if she could get us a menu. She returned with a menu and we ordered the loaded fries, but she tells us they ran out of fries earlier, so these aren’t the original fries as they had to go buy more. Hannah was good at refilling our glasses, however, she spilt tea on the table every time and almost dropped the pitcher in my boyfriends lap. Had it not been for his shoulder catching the tray, he would have wore sweet tea. Our food finally arrives. The prime rib steaks are prime rib sandwich steaks maybe 8oz (see the picture), not dinner steaks! The ribeye was maybe 10oz, definitely not 14oz. And the filet was dry and tasted like a hamburger. The fries were nasty cheap frozen fries. We ate our food as we were hungry and just wanted to go home. We asked for our checks. Hannah brought our checks and a side dish of shrimp, that was supposed to come out with the filet chef’s feature. She should have charged for the regular filet at this point and apologized for forgetting the featured item. Upon reviewing our bills, she did not split the tickets up correctly. My boyfriend and I had the fried green tomatoes, 2 sweet teas, and 2 prime ribs. The other couple with us had the teaser pleaser, 2 sweet teas, 14oz ribeye, and the 9oz filet. After being told they didn’t have potatoes and we were getting store bought frozen fries, we were charged us for the loaded fries, that no one even ate. She also never explained that the filet chef’s feature was more than the filet. Hannah never came back for us to correct this, so we just paid and left.

The service was extremely poor. Yes, everyone has a bad day, but Hannah needs to keep her personal life to herself. It was not our fault she did not ask off for her brothers wedding shower. Also, the food quality was mediocre, it definitely was not worth the price. Save your money and go to the Rustler, Outback, or even...

We were sure this was going to be a great place after being told by a couple of locals that it was the best place in the area to eat, but now I am thinking that they were assuming because it is the most expensive that it is the best. Also when we got there at a few minutes before 5 P.M. there was a decent size line of people waiting to get in...Once they opened everyone was seated promptly. The highlight of the meal was the Strawberry Butter that they bring out with the warm loaf of bread... My better 1/2 ordered the 8oz Ribeye Medium - Well, and it came out Well, and though that wasn''t that big of a deal, the steak being cold was, so she sent it back, and though it did come back warmer this time, well it was way past done by now. I ordered the Prime-Rib at Medium and got it at Medium -Well, and again that wasn't that big of a deal and mine was warm enough to eat, not hot... It was really a let down to walk in a place that calls itself a Steak House with Steak House Prices and to then get two steaks that were note cooked as ordered and that were served on cold plates.Our waiter did have us cut our steaks when he brought them to the table initially, and after we told him they were over cooked, he did offer to take them back and fix them, but I don't know how you could do that without cooking two more steaks, though he didn't say that's what would happen & my thoughts are if the cook(s) couldn't get them right the 1st time, well, plus we had somewhere to be and were running out of time... The icing on the cake and the real reason we will not be dining here again even though we will be in Newton Frequently is the fact that the Manager/Owner(Not sure) that was walking around asking how everyone's meal was, apparently was just asking and really didn't care. because when she asked us, my better 1/2 gave her a look of disdain and I just waved my hand to let her know the meal was just so-so, and she didn't even slow down to ask us to elaborate, heck she didn't say anything, she just kept going to the next table...So my thoughts are that if management doesn't care enough to get the customer(s) to explain why they may have had an issue with a meal that you really can't expect the rest of the staff to be any better than they are... Note: Our Server was as good as he could be though it appeared that they needed at least 2 more servers working the floor to take care of the full house that they had. I hope that our experience was not the norm here, but will not be gambling on it again... I did see a BBQ Restaurant after leaving here that I will be trying out on my next visit to Newton... Zack Garvins has been a favorite steak house of ours for years. That changed last night. I called to see if I could make a reservation and was told they didn’t take reservations but if we got there by 6:30 that it would be a very short wait if any. When we arrived a young black headed girl with no personality said it will be about a 45 minute wait. We sit down on the bench outside and was the only ones waiting. In about 10 minutes 4 people came up and sit across from us and the young lady running the check in desk opened the door and motioned them to come in. An older lady in the group told a little girl to follow sissy. Apparently this was the check in girl’s family or friends. Then a guy walked up to the check in counter and walked outside and motioned to his wife to come in. This couple were allowed to go ahead of us. Then another young couple came up and went straight to a table. It was very obvious that this girl was letting friends and family ahead of us. I then went in and questioned why we were being made wait. She said I was just about to call y’all. This young lady was also cleaning tables and kept going to the first group of 4 that went ahead of us and talking and playing with a little girl in the group.
