It's a bit hard to review Marygold's now as it's been open for less than one week. First impressions upon entering is the nice work done to the premises. A nice clean look keeping classic features along with some modern touches with lighting and seating in the bar area. We ate in the larger dining room which felt a bit empty and cold. I'm sure this is due to the fact that the seating was minimized and perhaps no window treatments. The bar area looked much cozier so I'd try to eat in there next time. The service was attentive and prompt if a bit too attentive with what seemed to be excess service staff hovering around us all the time. But no big deal and better that waiting for service. Food: My wife had the 4 carrot appetizer. The carrots were grilled and were unevenly cooked through. Some hard and some just right. Her thoughts were that the flavor was uninspiring as in not much flavor. Her main dish was the vegan tart. Nice taste but her personal preference would have been for the dish to be smaller ( the tart was very large) and to have a small side along with it on the plate. I started with the Caesar salad which was very good. Light on the dressing and on the bottom side of the plate was a cream of parmesan which was a nice addition. My main was the Croque Monsieur. I've had many in France and other French bistros and this came pretty close. But the bread was a bit over toasted (I could not cut with a knife and this is not a hand sandwich) and the ham was a bit thick and burnt on the edges. I'm putting this down to teething pains in the kitchen.. Dessert was Macaroons and lemon curd cheesecake. I asked before ordering whether they were like French Macaron or coconut Macaroon and was told the latter but they are in fact the French style Macaron which is totally different. This should be clarified. I returned them and got the apple tart. The cheescake is a plain NY style with the lemon curd and was pretty ordinary. Without the lemon curd the cake was a bit bland. The apple tart was very good and topped with marzipan. Different but I'm no fan of marzipan so would have preferred classic fresh whipped cream or a dollop of vanilla icecream. Bit of a long winded review here and all in all they're doing a good job in a very pretty setting. We'll be back soon when they start offering specials and look forward to supporting a...
Read moreMy wife and I had an incredible experience hosting our wedding reception at Marygold’s this past September. We have been longtime customers of Foundry Kitchen and Tavern and Good Old Days Pizza, naturally we were thrilled to host at Marygold’s! For starters, the reception space is beautiful. Being a historic Newtown landmark, every room is full of charm. There is an enormous bridal suite upstairs that my wife had access to from early morning, all the way until the wedding ended. It provided ample space for getting ready and was a convenient space to touch up as the night progressed. We hosted cocktail hour in the bar room and foyer before welcoming guests into the dining room. We loved having separate spaces throughout the night. Each room has a modern flare while still providing a warm and comfortable ambiance thanks to it’s history as an Inn. The food, as always, was top notch. Months later we are still hearing the praises from our guests! Countless people have said it was the best food they’ve ever enjoyed at a wedding. Each passed hors d'oeuvres was better than the next - and they passed until people were full! No need to worry about standing by the kitchen door to ensure you actually get food here - there was plenty to go around! The most difficult part of our wedding was choosing entrees - the tasting we had weeks prior to the wedding was full of delectable options! The pasta, salad and entree courses we chose were all spot on. We added an ice cream bar for after hours that was a hit as well! Lastly, the service was impeccable! All of the staff was attentive without being overbearing. You never wanted for anything - everybody was professional and kind. A special thank you to Christy, our event director, who made sure that the whole day went off without a hitch. She had been working with us right from our initial inquiry and was there by our side until the end of the wedding. She was there for my wife all day - helping with hair touch ups, escorting her to the church and making sure everting was just right for her throughout the day. Marygold’s is a real treasure to Newtown and we look forward to watching them...
Read moreGrowing up in the area and whenever I return for a visit, Marygolds on Main is always my destination of choice. It has become my go-to spot for various occasions including meeting friends for drinks, Sunday brunch with family, intimate tea parties, private events, and even a memorable wedding reception. Let's delve into a few of these experiences. For Sunday brunch, I indulged in their $3 mimosas, which were perfectly made and kept flowing by attentive waitstaff. My favorite brunch entree is their corn flake French toast: crispy on the outside, soft inside, drizzled with condensed milk syrup and served with a side of ice cream—absolutely heavenly. I particularly enjoy sitting in the bar area, especially in the round blue booths with a charming view of Main St. Another standout memory was a tea party one Sunday afternoon. We were greeted by the most adorable set up with tables set with mismatched tea cups and pots. Each of us chose our tea flavor, followed by tiers of delicious pastries and finger sandwiches—all crafted in-house. Lots of mothers and grandmothers came with their daughters all dressed up for the tea party and it was such a fun time. One event that left a lasting impression was a wedding reception hosted at Marygolds. Though the ceremony took place elsewhere, the couple chose Marygolds for their reception. The evening began with a lively cocktail hour in the bar and entryway, complete with live music and a variety of hors d'oeuvres, including a grazing table. Dinner was served in the spacious seating area, accommodating all guests comfortably with ample space for dancing. The celebration continued into the night with an after party at Good Old Days, located below Marygolds, known for its fantastic pizza. It was one of the most unique and well-executed wedding receptions I've had the pleasure of attending. I could easily write a book about my myriad experiences at Marygolds, but they all share a common thread—exceptional food, impeccable service, and a welcoming atmosphere. I look forward to making many more memories at...
