Transylvania Kitchen — Restaurant in Niles Township

I'm so glad Transylvania Kitchen exists. Let me tell you why - my husband and I went to Romania for our (long delayed, thanks to COVID) honeymoon, and unexpectedly fell in love with Romanian cuisine and baking. We had a lot of preconceived notions about what Romanian cooking would be like, but none of it came close to how delicious, filling, and healthy it is. I ended up buying three Romanian cooking and baking books as soon as we got home, but there were many foods that did not have recipes in those books (or the recipes were off), so I was delighted when I found Transylvania Kitchen. Everything is clearly made freshly, and they have a selection of sweet and savory baked goods, plus a rotating selection of actual Romanian cuisine. Everything we tasted and brought home was incredible, just like we remembered it, and stayed well in the fridge. I was especially fond of their bean dip with tomato-y, caramelized onions on the top (kept in their fridge), sweet farmers cheese pie, and soft cookie sandwiches with chocolate ganache in the center. But really, everything was excellent and worth the (reasonable, IMO) cost. Additionally, the baker (who was the owner, if I recall) was so sweet and welcoming. She doesn't have perfect English, but we were able to communicate just fine, and when we told her we honeymooned in Romania and fell in love with the country and its people and cuisine, she was so gracious, and even gave us a ton of samples to try. Even if you've never tried Romanian cooking or baking, please give this place a shot. It's a wonderful European bakery, and for once not a French patisserie, and we need more of those...

Ordered in advice a pie for easter . When I got there for pick up , they completely forgot about my order . Which was fine . They told me to come back after a few hours because they'll make it for me . It was fine after all . My brother picked it up later on , came home , and the pie was totally different than what i ordered . I called to let them know and explain the situation . They hang up on me . And that was it . Kind of rude and unprofessional . Mistakes happen , but own it . For a regular day , you don't care that much . But it was easter time for us...

Ill preface this by saying I am very home sick. This place is everything I wanted and more. They have amazing pastries and you can also get some traditional cooked food. Most food is sold in larger portions so it's great if you are ordering for the holidays. The cozonac is delicious and they are so beautiful. Definitely recommend trying them even if you aren't Romanian. It's like a delicious sweet bread and it's amazing with coffee in the morning.
