Salmich's Burgers & Hoagies — Restaurant in Norfolk

Praise the sandwich Gods - we have a winner in Norfolk!! Located in an area that lacks a lot of truly good food options, Salmich's is a real find. How we had not discovered this place is a mystery. Well, not really a mystery, we just don't go this way to eat because there really isn't any reason to look for food in this neck of the woods. Thanks to Yelp though, I have a new go to sandwich shop.

I ordered the Italian and Hubby got the steak sandwich (big surprise, but not). Oh my! Believe the hype - these sandwiches are HUGE! I love the pics people have posted with their sandwich next to their babies. I would have taken a pic next to our 8 month old dachshund, because that's how long these things are, but he would have scarfed it down and that wouldn't have ended well for anyone.

What can I say about the bread? SO soft and fresh and yummy. Sure the sandwiches may be a little pricey, but you really can't eat it all at once. This is a lunch the next day kinda sandwich. Tons of Boar's Head meats and cheese topped off with fresh veggies and I was hooked. The steak sandwich was real steak (none of that steakum junk), and while not as large as the sub, but still hefty.

We got our subs to go and the service was fast and friendly. We will definitely be back, as there are SO many other things on the menu that I want to try (like those amazing looking burgers and onion rings - my apologies to the people dining in - I couldn't help staring!). So, I don’t eat much beef, But occasionally, I really do crave a burger. The reviews for this place sounded great, so I decided to try it out. First the good: the bun was fresh, and was toasted, the patty was freshly made with good quality beef. The onion rings, were sublime. Like magical. The tempura-like coating they put on it them is truly wonderful. And the lady who took my order was very nice. Now, for the not so good: it took very close to an hour to get my food. The burger was very overcooked. I ordered it medium rare and it was medium well to well done. They use canned mushrooms for their sautéed mushrooms, and while they did the best they could with them, they are still canned mushrooms. They also only do full orders of onion rings, and that was really way too much for one person. They are severely understaffed. The lady that took my order was also answering the phone and dealing with a ton of people. I could only see two people behind working the line, and when I got there, which was lunchtime on a Monday, there were at least seven or eight tickets ahead of mine. There was no one who had any time to clean the tables or replace toilet paper in the bathroom, or anything like that, and while the place wasn’t a big mess, because people did try not to leave a big mess The tables were still kind of gross. Update March 2022:

Gave them another shot 2 years later. 4 of us ordered cheesesteaks. We figured it out, they put Worcestershire sauce on the steaks. Yuk! My group has eaten at about 20 different steak spots in HR and this is a unique, uncommon twist on steak sandwiches. The verdict was that we all didn’t like it at all. Philly cheesesteaks just need ribeye steak, cheese and onions with some seasoning. Maybe burgers and wings are their specialty. If I go back I’ll try something other than steak.

I heard great things about Salmich’s so we decided to give it a try. A group of us showed up. I had the cheesesteak. Consistency was a problem. My friend ordered the exact same hoagie as me and his came out totally different. First the cheesesteak was wayyyy to spicy. Not even sure why they made it spicy. 2nd, my was dripping with some kind of grease/watery substance. It wasn’t juice from the steak but more like worstershire sauce or something. Partially through eating it the bread was soaked with this unknown liquid and made it basically inedible. Like I mentioned consistency was an issue because my friends exact hoagie like mine did not turn out this way.
