Sweet Jams Cafe — Restaurant in Norfolk

Had such high hopes walking in. It looked clean and comfy. Walking out I was still hungry and disappointed. Most things I wanted to order where out. No shrimp. No grits. No fish. No spray for the waffle machine so no chicken and waffles. I ordered the veggie omelet ($7.99 for just the omelet and two pieces of toast) Too many veggies! Now, normally I wouldn’t complain about too much food but there was no egg after peppers inside and on top were stuffed in. Additionally it was bland. No salsa. No sour cream avail to help the taste. Not even salt and pepper that I had to ask and wait for while the overwhelmed waitress tended to her one other customer and a phone call helped. It was watery.

The dismissive and disinterested waitress at least tried to make it right by getting me something else while my daughter tried to finish her food that was prepared incorrectly. (Fried hard eggs when she ordered over medium) My daughter loves pancakes. She only ate one. They taste like cupcakes instead of pancakes.

I thought, just bacon and eggs. You can’t mess that up (well too much) but As soon as she came back to the table and passed me the PAPER PLATE with my food on it I was disappointed. She immediately recognized that we had already discussed no pork and apologized.

I will go back to try lunch one day as it seems maybe it was an off day cause the reviews cant be that off from what I experienced. covid has restaurants just opening back up so maybe they are getting back into the groove.

Let’s hope it’s soon cause between the waitress and not having food to serve at a restaurant that serves food ... ehhhh what do...

Honestly one of the worst restaurants I have ever eaten at. It hurts to say this as the hostess, waitress, owner, and cook were very friendly, but service can only carry you so far when the food is as insipid as this was. I ordered the waffle combo with over easy eggs and turkey sausage and my wife ordered the Philly cheese steak with french fries. We waited over 22 minutes for our food to arrive at our table and we were the only ones in the restaurant. My waffle was more undercooked and soggy than an Eggo waffle taken from the freezer and left on the counter for 2 hours at 72 degrees. Not only was it undercooked but it tasted as though it was made with sea water due to the amount of salt in it. The turkey sausage was the worst I have had in my lifetime, and that's saying something because turkey sausage is never "great". The Philly cheese steak my wife had was only a 6" roll smothered in cheese with bits of steak here and there. The fries were clearly store bought and unsalted. I asked for them to take the waffle back and they went to make a new one that took another 24 minutes to finally arrive...still being the only people in the restaurant. This time the waffle wasn't bad but it was still overly salty and still not even a "good" waffle. The owner gave me 10% off for being dissatisfied with the meal, which is ok, but at least one of the items should have been comped. Again, the staff were very pleasant and they were still tipped because they seemed genuinely interested in making things better. In the end, I'm sorry to say that I will not be returning to this restaurant and I will not recommend...

I've been to this business a couple of times prior to covid and came past to get food for my siblings. My sister had just finished dialysis a few hours prior to our visit, so it was easier to take the menu to her at the vehicle and let her tell me what she wanted instead of get the walker and whatever else she needed out. First the chicken salad sandwich is no longer available, but is still listed on the menu. So my brother chose the bbq which "comes" with coleslaw and chips. The young man informed me that they don't have chips, but I could add fries for and additional charge. Chips are listed on the menu! When it came time to pay, the amount came to $20.23. I questioned him, because $8.99 + $5.99, with tax don't come to that amount. He informed me that the items were $9.99 and $6.99, but the menu had the lower prices listed. He went to the owner to let her know what I had stated, but she was too busy to come make things right with the customer. I understand prices are going to change, because it's inevitable, but they really need to change their menu to notate...
