My wife and I met friends at TEJO based on our friends' recommendation. They had been there before and said it was as good as any Portuguese restaurant in Newark. We were all in the mood for some good Portuguese food. And, boy, did TEJO live up to its promise.
The skirt steak was super delightful, the soup delicious, and the service superior. Even the OLD FASHIONS I ordered from the bar were on the money. Very, very good.
We were fortunate to be seated in the covered patio section where we were sheltered from the rain and pretty much had the place to ourselves. The privacy and the intimacy were as warm as sitting by a fire.
The one drawback, which was only a little bit bothersome was how quickly the food came and went. I like quick service like anyone else but at times it felt like we were being rushed out. Our server never said anything to make us feel that way but the breakneck pace of the service kind of said it all. Sometimes a moderate service pacing goes a long way.
Despite that one minor drawback, we all truly enjoyed TEJO and will return soon. Parking was super easy, right across the street in an underground parking area.
Good place. 4 of us spent 200 dollars altogether. And that was probably because of my OLD FASHIONS (just 2, I swear). The sangria was quite tasty and with enough bite to spare you from ordering additional...
Read moreFood is not good, and it's way overpriced.Service is slow, and for whatever reason, they can't seem to get the orders right ever. Example: when one asks for steak cooked rare, it shouldn't be well-done. Most of the barmaids are snooty (unless you are a male customer). Once, I ordered a Virgin Mary (a Bloody Mary sans vodka) and they tried to charge me only one dollar less than a Bloody Mary with vodka. "That makes no sense," I said, "a shot of vodka costs more than $1." They just gave me a dirty look (and would not lower the price).
The owner is rude and never buys drinks for customers. If you try to send the food back (because it doesn't taste good or is not what you ordered), you get an argument (and they charge full price). On the plus side, it's very clean (especially the ladies' room) and the Karaoke guy does a good job. They might consider putting a partition up in the mens' room, however, because very often customers at the bar are in full view of men in the process of relieving themselves (wish I...
Read moreIf I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. I went for dinner on Friday night and was disgusted by the owner and staff's behavior. I have been there before and never had a problem. This time, the bartender forgot to put our dinner order in. We asked the bartender and owner about the food, and they wouldn't admit any mistakes and were nasty to us. They just said that they were busy except two couples that came in after us received their food before us. The owner was rude, nasty, and disrespectful. It would have been different if he apologized and offered something for free, but he was nasty. When I spoke Portuguese to him, he was surprised and then became nastier because he probably realized I could understand him. I will NEVER go there again, and I will discourage my friends and family from going...
