One of the most unfortunate meals I've had in a long time, switch the manager and you'll be fine...
I love the original Mykonos and was delighted when I saw one was opening around the corner from me. Prices are high so we waited until a good friend came into town. The meal took almost 3 hours---totally different than the original Mykonos (which we've dined at many times). The egregious wait was the beginning of the issues. Our waiter was nice and when food actually came it was fine. The issue is the "manager". We ordered the crab empanadas and I asked how many it came with. I was told two and I asked the manager when he came by if I could order a third. I was told it would be a $9 up charge. I said fine but only two arrived. After 2.5 hours of waiting we were finally served the salt baked branzino. I said this is one of their top specialities (in an attempt to quell the numerous complaints about the wait). The manager interjected and said everything on the menu is a speciality and then asked me "you know what I mean?" He then said he was the manager and its his pleasure to serve us. His passive aggressiveness was extremely awkward and I was asked about it once the manager left. All in all a truly unfortunate experience. Keep in mind this that their prices are such that this will likely be a special occasion place but the experience delivered makes it anything but that. If you are looking for such a spot in Cabin John mall go to The Grove. If they switch managers I have no doubt they'll be fine as the Rockville restaurant is a true gem. The manager needs to gain more experience in hospitality before taking on such a role. Please note that the manager and owner are different. The owner Angelo Mitsotakis is great. He was absent most the meal and when we did see him at the end he was busy speaking with friends. This review in no way should be a reflection on him but I hope he sees it as I worry that the restaurant will quickly fail after the opening crowd has passed if a...
Read moreArrived around 2:30 PM on a Sunday, so my wife and I were seated immediately. The seating was very comfortable, with ample cushioning for us both. I ordered a Santorini Sunset cocktail ($17), an Octopus Mezze ($27), and the Pastisio special ($38), while my wife ordered the Salmon entrée, medium rare ($33). The cocktail was fruity and refreshing, with a floral, creamy note; it was very smooth and easy to drink. The octopus, consisting of a large tentacle portion, was meaty, savory, and had a tangy sweet afternote from the balsamic vinegar; it was perfectly grilled and tender enough to cut with a butter knife, and paired well with the earthy notes of lima bean cream. The mains were similarly delicious, as the salmon arrived perfectly cooked on a bed of tangy cauliflower tabbouleh, while my special arrived in two parts: the pastisio itself and a generous side portion of green beans, stewed until soft with onions and tomatoes. The layers of pasta, minced beef, and bechamel in the pastisio maintained their form admirably as I cut into it; a frankly impressive feat of culinary architecture. The flavors for both were excellent, and the portions for both mains were generous enough for leftovers. We finished with a dessert of Trigona Panoramatos ($12), which arrived with delicate phyllo cones overflowing with subtly-sweet cardamom custard and crushed pistachios; it was all the best aspects of baklava with a wonderfully creamy addition. Our server today was Jacob, an attentive, friendly waiter who we recognized from a different Cabin John restaurant in the past; he was as excellent as the last time we met him, and his service and demeanor was top-notch for the entire meal. While this is certainly among the pricier offerings in the shopping center, I would consider it...
Read moreOur group of four was very excited to try the new Mykonos in Potomac, Maryland. We have been fans of Mykonos in Rockville, but this restaurant in Potomac is nothing like the Rockville restaurant. It was a disaster! We were crammed into a table made for two or at most three people. Two of us wanted to share the 28 oz. Bone-In ribeye steak, and have glasses of the California cabernet wine on the menu. Despite being listed on the menu, neither were available. I got lamb chops and our friend ordered the filet “medium.” It came well done and tough. My wife, who never has two drinks, ordered a gin & club soda. It was so watered down, she ordered a second one, which also was watered down. We asked the owner why do they list items on the menu if they don’t have them. He had no reason that made any sense. And throughout dinner, the music was so loud we could barely hear each other at our little table. It even got louder before we left. But the worst thing was our shockingly high bill. Even though one of us only ordered a spring roll and fried zucchini appetizers for dinner, our bill was about $380 without tip! With tip, it was well over $400. But even worst was when were leaving the restaurant, the owner asked me how I liked it. I said it was shockingly expensive, to which he simply shrugged his shoulders. The next morning my wife and I both woke up feeling embarrassed and mortified that we suggested this restaurant to our dear friends—and felt way overcharged for an entirely...
