March 2025: I used to frequent this place in 2017 (when my office was nearby.) The only thing that's changed since then is the prices (but it's the same everywhere, way up.)
But the quality of food and service are still excellent. In the last few years, I've been to a lot of Mexican places near my home in Santa Clara, in search of "my comfort food". But most don't have good Enchiladas, or don't give chips & salsa, or they whine about giving you extra salsa or chips or just refuse).
This place hasn't changed a bit in this regard. Warm smiles greeted us, the English-speaking woman came out to assist us when we needed help ordering, they asked us to be seated and brought out the chips & salsa (which they gladly replenished for me as I devoured it). Great spicy & super tasty salsa.
Enchiladas Vere had 4 enchiladas - with 3 kinds of meat options (I got two steak, pork, and chicken). All were freshly made. The plate came with avocados in the salad, and fresh beans & rice.
Amazing that 8 years later, and the quality of food and service is still the same!
Loved coming here today. (Only the prices are steep - but that's true for every other place. So not sure what they or I can...
Read moreI've eaten here a couple of times and also ordered take-out. The employees are very nice and friendly. Parking can be an issue here. They do have a lot on the left of the restaurant but it can get very cramped and crowded. Street parking is available but you may have to hunt for an open spot.
I am a sucker for Chile Rellenos and have had theirs twice with the red sauce. They are pretty good here. I was annoyed because when I ordered take-out I had to pay the full price for 1 chile relleno but didn't get any rice or beans with it. I'll be sure to ask for the rice and beans with it next time.
Their fish tacos are great and so are the Camarones a la Diabla (shrimp with a deep red spicy sauce). I also love the flavor of their Caldo de Camaron y Pescado -- mild fish/shrimp soup that is perfect for a cold day. Both are served with fresh tortillas!
The carnitas burrito and the sopes were just OK. The carnitas meat was a bit dry.Probably wouldn't order these again. The salsa is not...
Read moreA small, cozy restaurant. We were returning from Yosemite and were really hungry. We were in the mood for Mexican food and found Mexcal on Google. We were not disappointed at all. Everything from the location, staff, menu and ambience looked authentic. Since the menu didn't have a description of the dishes, we were searching on Google to understand what they are. I ate the Chili Verde (and, I highly recommend it!) which is one of the top dishes of this restaurant. I loved it! It was delicious. The pork curry had the right amount of tanginess (I usually don't like really tangy food) and everything else on the plate complemented it perfectly. The Indian in me was happy to eat this dish. The rice portion is small so I ordered extra. Sadly, I couldn't finish the pork curry as I was full by then. But, if I'm ever in this part of the world again, I'll definitely eat here.
The servers were patient and welcoming. 5 stars for the food and...
