We first ate at Hawg Jaw a couple of years ago. Back when we started our KC BBQ Tour. 60+ places later, we re-visited because I remembered liking it, but it was before I started reviewing consistently on Google.
The burnt ends are large cubes of brisket vs. authentic burnt ends, but they have a very deep smoke and are very lean. I miss the bark and I do like a little fat for the moisture, generally. Not to say these were dry. Many reviews of the brisket were that it was moist. I experienced it as over-cooked and slightly dry. I think they slice it too thin, and it could maintain moisture better if they didn't. I had the onion rings which I rarely order fried food and it was a huge serving and they were really crispy. The beans had a little meat in them and were pretty good, but not in the running for the best beans in KC. Kurt had french fries, which are battered, seasoned, and crispy; as well as the sweet potato fries, which are served with marshmallow (and he did not use that). I like the smoked ketchup, it was an excellent pairing to the onion rings. I had the spicy sauce which was not spicy and was a little sweet. It's not a thick sauce like a lot of KC places. (I have no preference on consistency, I judge based on my personal taste/the flavor.) Jason had the brisket BBQ nachos.
I very much appreciate that masks are required (I hope they do this regardless of local laws), they have markers for social distancing while standing in line to order your food, and the area for picking up your food is large enough that you can have your space. Tables are spaced apart, sauces, etc are now in single-servings vs. self-serve, utensils are disposable. I do not like that they are using Styrofoam for their cups and for serving their beans. I wish they'd use something less negatively impactful on our planet. I didn't order a drink because of this.
There is street parking, the entrance is semi-accessible. They do have a ramp or steps up to the ordering area, but the ramp is very steep and not ADA compliant. Would be an extreme challenge for a person to push themselves in a wheelchair or to push someone else in a wheelchair or stroller. But with the space they have, I still admire the effort. Restrooms are on the same floor level as the...
Read moreIve read so many great reviews & love barbque So was very anxious to try this place. I've never been to a restaurant where you can't order a one meat meal. Now that I've ben having to take mantraro for more than a year, I just don't have much of an appetite. I also live, on a low income of social security. So didn't want to spend a lot, especially for food.I wasn't going to eat at that time. I'm so I ordered my fave (burnt ends) & brisket. The burnt ends were delicious and tender other than the one large chunk that was mostly fat that I had to spit into a napkin. The brisket was not juicy and tender. It was dry and almost tasteless. Wasn't warm either. It's called the dinners, come with 2 sides. I love good baked beans and I asked her if they were sweet which is what my family & I always have she said they're not real sweet. And there is some spices in them, but she didn't think they were real s*. I told her I can't do spicy i better not try the beans.. She said the coleslaw is pretty spicy & that's probably why they sell the least of that. I ordered the potato salad and the cheesy corn & she said neither are spicy. They BOTH we're somewhat spicy and the potato salad was so spicy that I had to take a couple drinks of water after every bite. If the toast was supposed to be garlic toast, it sure didn't taste like it. It just tasted like soft buttered, toast. You have to add an extra $3 to get burnt ends with the 2 meet meal. I was pretty disappointed to spend $22 for dinner with no drink and the only part that was really good were the burnt ends. Really surprised since I read so darn, many...
Read more1st time here. Was not sure when went in, if we ordered first then brought to a table. ▪︎They have a Ramp to walk up to counter area to order your food. (or there is wooden stairs. Ordering area is set up high. Then the dining area is nestled down below ▪︎ I ordered lunch combo medium: I got brisket & turkey with baked beans. My husband got a lunch combo large: which is half pound of meat. He got brisket & burnt ends with sweet potatoes fries (there is a up charge for sweet potato) The burnt ends where really yummy, large in size, nice and tender, great flavor. Sweet potato fries were good, but very small paper holder ( you don't get enough to share) so beware. My brisket & turkey sandwich was truly good size (Medium Orders you can get 2 Meats). Both had great flavor, tender. They have different sauces at the tables to choice from & plastic silverwear are located there at the tables also. ▪︎ My favorite the baked beans(EVER) the smoke flavor, truly yummy. They do have extra juice on them. So beware you will need to beware not to wear them when eating them. ▪︎Drink refills are up in the area, up the ramp area. To the right of where you order. They even have little towelettes at the table for your convenience. ▪︎There are alot of wooden tables, kind like country, family tables, where you can sit down, and enjoy eating with big groups of family or friends, to enjoy a good meal together. ▪︎I do feel prices would be closer to $18-21 on average per person. ▪︎Do recommend them, yummy barbecue, they are a hidden jem. Everyone is friendly. It was Maria's birthday she was...
