Coffee or Tea? Kailua — Restaurant in Oʻahu

Outstanding experience here! After grabbing dinner at the Thursday farm market across the street, we stopped in at Coffee or Tea for a dessert. My son, a mango smoothie connoisseur, had seen the bubble tea sign during our trips in and around Kailua and wanted to give it a try. We are glad we did! First, the menu lists the kinds of milk tea available: Assam, oolong, jasmine, etc - always a sign of a real tea in your drink. We ordered a grande Assam milk tea, grande mango smoothie, and a shaved ice dessert (Asian style shaved ice, not the Hawaiian style at most places in Hawaii). Grande is their smallest size, but we found it very generous for the price. The mango smoothie had a nice consistency and the boba pearls were perfectly cooked - soft and still a little warm when my son received the drink. The Assam milk tea was also excellent. Same perfect boba, and a milk tea that was slightly sweet and smooth. The highlight was the shaved ice. For a very reasonable 6 dollars, we received a shave ice with our choice of 5 toppings. We chose three traditional asian toppings: azuki (red) bean, herb (grass) jelly, and condensed milk; a new topping: coffee jelly; and ice cream because...ice cream! The shave ice was large enough for all 3 of us to share. The coffee jelly was great! A coffee taste, but not too sweet! Azuki (red) bean was a nice soft, but not mushy texture. Grass jelly was a subtle taste and not too gelatinous. The ice cream was also very good quality: creamy and not full of air! To top of our experience, the owner/server was fantastic! It may have helped that it was a down time, but everything was made with care and presented artfully. Also, he could tell that we were enjoying the shaved ice and offered two of his other toppings for us to sample: custard and tea jelly! They were both also excellent. We found out that he makes the coffee jelly, tea jelly, and custard himself. Handmade toppings explains why the taste and quality were so high! This is my new favorite place to get milk tea. The Assam milk tea is especially awesome. It's made previously and kept in the fridge but you can tell it's made with real tea and not powder and it is served really fast. The boba has some of the best texture of most other bubble tea places as others tend to over or under cook it. They don't use the thermally sealed cups like most other bubble tea places but that doesn't detract from the great taste of the tea. They also provide samples of many of their teas if you ask. Hands down one of the best milk teas on the island! When in doubt go with the Assam milk tea. Instead of boba I love adding custard and coffee jelly, so ono! The drinks are consistently made well and the staff is friendly! This location is always clean and provides quick service. The smoothies are well made and delish if milk tea isnt your thing.
