Aloha Everyone! Got a new review for you today! My husband wanted to pick up dinner from Great Wall Chinese Restaurant, so I decided to order the Orange Chicken Plate with Garlic Fried Rice. I liked it well enough, very mild tasting, no strong flavors. Normally I like a more bold taste in my food but I wasn’t feeling well the past week so mild worked better for me. The chicken pieces were popcorn size, just right, I dislike huge chunks. The Orange Chicken was a tad bit on the dry side but they had a decent amount of sauce so it ended up being ok. It didn’t seem like freshly crushed garlic was used in the Garlic Fried Rice because it did not have a strong garlic flavor at all so depending on how you like yours, it might or might not be to your taste. Same goes for the Orange Chicken. Not a strong orange flavor. On the weak side compared to other places. The French Fries were VERY IMPRESSIVE which is funny because when my husband told me they served fries here I busted out laughing. I wasn’t laughing when I ate them though! I was shocked at how super super good they were! PERFECT in fact. Wouldn’t think to order fries at a Chinese Restaurant but if you like fries, do yourself a favor and don’t pass on these! They seriously blow 95% of the competition in this area away. My Husband had the Black Pepper Chicken and an order of Fried Rice with peas and carrots. He enjoyed his meal. My mom had the Cold Ginger Chicken Plate. She said it was good. Sauce was different from the majority of places with the bright green so it depends on your taste. Very good service at this establishment. Really nice people and that always makes doing a review a pleasure. Mahalo for reading and Support Local!!!
09/20/2023 My Husband wanted Great Wall Chinese Restaurant last night for Dinner, and this time he picked the Kim Chee & SPAM fried rice. I could tell when I took the photos that he would be disappointed because honestly I didn’t see the Kim Chee. It was there apparently, you just needed to use tweezers. Order something else. My mom however, got the Large Order of Won Ton Soup and this was VERY satisfying for her. She enjoyed the vegetables along with good broth, and of course the won tons in there. There were TEN (10 pcs.) Of LARGE Won Ton!!! She was very very happy and said from now on this is where she is ordering from because she never saw such generous portions anywhere else. They also gave hot mustard too. I just ordered the fries because all day I didn’t have much of an appetite and I needed to take my meds so it was enough for me. I did however order dessert today. Deep fried Oreos for my mom and Butter Mochi for me. The Oreos got a thumbs up 👍 but I would pass on the Butter Mochi.
12/09/2023 Aloha! Tried something new on the Great Wall menu tonight. Tried their Mochiko Chicken with plain fried rice. Although I had much more flavorful ones elsewhere, I really liked the bit size pieces and it was cooked to perfection. I had my own sauce so it worked out fine. I liked the plain fried rice for its simplicity. I do not, sadly, like the peas, carrots or egg like they have in normal fried rice that most locals like. Sorry. Just me. I really liked the deep fried plain dough with honey dipping sauce 😍 very simple but made well. U can make any dessert you want from the deep fried dough if you don’t want to use their dipping sauce. Add ice cream with chocolate or caramel sauce, whipped cream with strawberries, or dunk them in coffee! I highly recommend you trying them ❤️ my husband who was nice enough to pick up our food tonight, tried their chow funn noodles with bean sprouts and char siu. He said it was good. As usual, their fries were awesome. Crispy and hot 😉. Moms enjoyed her usual won ton soup. Mahalo for reading and as always, please support...
Read moreWe haven't been to Great Wall Chinese Restaurant since they moved to their new location but decided to have lunch there today since we have family members visiting us from the mainland and they all love Chinese food. The new restaurant is really several steps up from the old location that was located right across the street. The new restaurant is clean, bright, well lit, nicely decorated, comfortable, has lots of seating, a clean restroom, and two ways in and out for safety and convenience. There is a parking lot in the rear with about 10 stalls by my estimate.
The menu is very diverse and they serve a wide variety of foods. We ordered Egg Drop Soup, half a roasted duck, Kau Yuk, Crispy Gau Gee Mein, Pork Ong Choy Garlic (Please excuse the incorrect spelling in the photo), Mongolian Beef which you can get mild or spicy, rice, and hot tea. The food was plenty enough for 5 adults and we still had leftovers to take home.
Our two waitresses were Flo and Fay. Flo is new there and is beautiful young lady with a pleasant personality and sweet smile. We like her very much. Fay is an old timer and was full of smiles as always. Both ladies served us quickly, efficiently, and pleasantly. We are always happy when our waitress is pleasant because nobody enjoys eating food when served by a grouchy person.
The food we ordered today was really delicious and cooked perfectly. The roast duck was crispy but not burned and well seasoned. I normally don't like to order duck because the skin is sometimes still soft and fatty. The crispy gau gee mein was seasoned just right and the noodles were perfect. Not too hard and not too soft. The vegetables were still a bit crunchy which is how they are supposed to be. The Mongolian beef was mild which is what we ordered but it still had some heat along with the slightly sweet sauce. Fay said Mongolian Beef is one of their most popular dishes.
The egg drop soup was very tasty and our visiting family members commented on the veggies inside the soup which was a welcome surprise. Apparently the egg drop soup in Tennessee only has egg in it and nothing else.
The kau yuk was tender and tasty according to my husband and sister-in-law. I don't eat kau yuk because it tends to be too fatty for my taste so I'll defer to their opinion which was very high.
The pork with garlic and unchoy was also perfectly seasoned and cooked. There were no leftovers of that dish or the egg drop soup and everyone was full after eating all that food and sharing two pots of hot tea.
We were all so pleased with our dining experience today and recommend you give Great Wall Chinese Restaurant a try when you have a craving for Chinese food.
We were lucky to arrive just at 12:30 p.m. and there was just one full table at the time with 4 diners so the timing was really good for us. More people arrived after us but we got all our food within 20 minutes after ordering. And since we have leftovers we can eat all that good food again tonight! Doing a happy...
Read moreThe Great Wall Chinese Restaurant was an unexpected find. We try to find non-touristy and local restaurants. It’s about 35 minutes from Honolulu. Annika (sp?) was a wonderful server. She answered all our questions, gave perfect suggestions and was very attentive. The food was delicious and had leftovers (we ordered a lot). We had crab rangoons & the soft won tons as appetizers. Pat ordered the General Tso’s Chicken Plate and half Roasted Duck, which he LOVED. I ordered the Pepper Garlic Pork Chop (DELICIOUS!!) and Hawaiian Fried Rice. I asked for sau-sau-an (sp? a type of Filipino vinegar garlic dipping sauce), which added to the taste of the pork. The Ube Ice Cream was a delicious surprise. The reason for the 4 stars for food is because the fried rice was a little overcooked. If we were staying longer, we would go to it a few more times. If you get a chance to go, you...
