Quite possibly the worst golf course experience in Chicago. The tee times are 8 minute apart and every tee time is booked, so expect a 10-16 minute wait on every. single. hole. Our group ended up leaving after 9 which took 3 hours with 2 groups in front and 2 groups behind.
The check in desk does not state whether the course is cart path only when you check in, but rather right before you tee off. I've played here twice and both times were cart path only because the course has no drainage so any bit of water makes everything soggy.
They often pair walkers with cart folks, so expect that delay. I don't like mentioning this because golfers come in all skill levels and ages, but people should know that the average golfer at this club is high handicap and you will often see 5-7 shots to get to the green with several duffs and they do not mind taking 6 hours to play a full round.
There is absolutely no insect abatement program so expect horse flies, mosquitoes and smaller biting insects.
Tee boxes are destroyed, fairways have divots everywhere, but the greens are the worst of it all - pitch marks that no one cares to fix, three different types of grass and many areas that have only dirt or sand. Sand bunkers have rock chips in them and unracked. Club says there is a fungus issue on the greens but reality is there is simply too much traffic for any repair work.
Some positives: ball cleaner box at each hole, decent halfway house, beverage cart takes Apple pay.
With that said, here are some things the club can do to improve nearly everything.
Charge more and have 15 minute tee time intervals. Pair walkers with walkers and cart people with cart people. Marshall actually do their job and enforce pace of play. Make first tee time 7am, so ground crew can spend 2 hours fixing the greens, filling in fairway divots, and repairing tee boxes.
With this said, I will never play this course again, there are far too many better options that provide a far better experience (Mistwood, Arrowhead, Cantigny,...
Read moreThis public/private golf club offers 18 holes of well-designed golf, along with a practice facility and club house.
Plenty of water and sand hazards, along with mature trees, make this a challenging track for most players. Very long hitters (270+ yard drivers) may want a longer distance course, however.
It's a well-maintained and walkable course. The greens have fungus issues in places, but the maintenance crew is getting it under control. This track gets a lot of play - it was pretty full on our Monday morning round. So expect to see divots on fairways and unrepaired ball marks on greens. Our pace of play was good, but we got an early start.
It's an attractive course. And very flat, except for the greens which offer sloping terrain challenges on virtually every hole. Course design is dynamic, with dog-legs and water making shot and club selection decisions key to scoring well.
Staff is friendly and doing their jobs. Starter, ranger, and front desk staff, beverage cart, and restaurant staff all pleasant and working their posts.
We had lunch after the round in the clubhouse. The turkey wrap was great.
I do recommend OBGC to golfers of all playing skills. ...
Read moreWhat a beautiful golf course!! My friend and I took a weekend getaway to Chicago. We decided we would leave early Saturday and stop to golf on the way down there. I just happened to pick this one (about an hour from where we were staying) and i'm glad I did because it was beautiful! When we got there we ended up being an hour early which was fine because we were both starving from the drive! I got a hot dog which actually was good. It wasn't a cheap one, It was an all beef hot dog. After that we tried out the putting green while we waited for our tee time. It was a HOTT day but we had so much fun ended up getting paired with two guys who were so nice (very good golfers) and told us some places to try in chicago. The greens and fairways were well kept/maintained! I will say the second 9 we golfed we ended up leaving and not finishing because it was so slow, and I mean SLOW! But overall I would definitely recommend this golf course and would love to golf again if I got the chance. I'm knocking one star off because the tee times were very close and it was like I said very slow,...
