Grew up on the East Coast and have eaten bagels in each place I’ve lived along the way. There are regional differences, but the Daly Bagel advertises itself as the right combination between midwestern and east coast goodness, and that pretty well nails it. Apparently the owner grew up in New Jersey and she understands that a bagel needs to be chewy to be great. Have gotten bagels from here several times and all of the flavors have been terrific. I would recommend this place to any East Coaster who is a little homesick for the taste of a genuine bagel, but judging from the lines each day, Midwesterners are finding out how good these bagels are very quickly. There is a rumor that once they expand into sandwiches after the quarantine there just might be a Taylor ham sandwich on the menu and then I will know I have reached nirvana. Update: 1-28-2021 They delivered on their promise to add Taylor Ham!!! (I'm a little late in posting this update; it happened several months ago) Have had it several times and each time is like a little journey back to my hometown in NJ. Delicious and a great alternative to the sausage and bacon versions of all the other breakfast sandwiches. Go in and give it a try! You won't be disappointed. Update 4-27-21 If you haven't tried Daly Bagels Bavarian pretzels, you are officially deprived. If you have ever been to Bavaria, or to Philadelphia for that matter, you will be thrilled to taste this addition to the menu (I am a little late finding out about this new...
Read moreAs a lifelong resident of Chicagoland, I'm always on the lookout for great spots to grab a quick bite. The Daly Bagel in Oak Park didn't disappoint! Located just a short walk from Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio, this neighborhood gem is the perfect refueling stop between architectural tours of The City of Big Shoulders.
Stepping into The Daly Bagel, I was immediately greeted by the warm, inviting aromas of toasted bagels wafting throughout the snug but cheerful shop. The friendly staff behind the counter wasted no time taking my order and within minutes I was enjoying a sesame bagel stacked high with cream cheese, tomatoes, and onions. With each bite I was transported, if only for a moment, out of the bitter winds of The Windy City and into a cozy breakfast nook in New York City.
In addition to satisfying my bagel craving, The Daly Bagel gives back to the Chiberian community. Along with great coffee and baked goods, they offer space for local artists to display their work. The eclectic, ever-rotating art exhibits are another reason to make this Oak Park gem a regular stop. Whether starting your day or fueling up between visits to the nearby Frank Lloyd Wright sights, The Daly Bagel is sure to hit the spot. I give it two big shiny bags of gold for excellence in bagelry. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll head back...
Read moreI recently stopped by The Daly Bagel in Oak Park and came away impressed. Their bagels are chewy and satisfying, with a good crisp crust and soft interior. A few things stood out:
What I loved: • Great flavor and texture — they do a solid job with “New York–style” bagels. • Excellent sandwich options — the “Ultimate” (whitefish spread + extras) has been singled out by Chicago Magazines as one of the standout dishes in the area. • Warm, local feel — the shop’s story (from the owner baking at home to opening a storefront) gives it a community charm. • Coffee and spreads complement the bagels well, making it a nice spot for breakfast or a light lunch.
What could be better: • Seating is limited — there are only a couple of small tables and a bench, so during busy times you might need to take your bagel to go. • Because they make things fresh and with care, some items (especially special sandwiches or spreads) might sell out early. • Sometimes the shop feels a little cramped if there are many customers inside at once.
All in all, The Daly Bagel is a solid gem in Oak Park. If you love good bagels and want to support a local place with personality, it’s definitely worth a visit. Would I go...
