This is by far one of the 2 best coffee shops in the Bay. Not just Oakland. The staff are always kind and friendly as hell, the food is always served piping hot and tastes hella fresh (the empanadas are delectably delicious if you're a first time customer looking for a recommendation), and the atmosphere is amazing. You can tell that a lot of love goes into everything they do here. The decor is dope and reminds me of the kind of place that the likes of MLK, Dolores Huerta and Bobby Seale would all be comfortable in. As far as I know, it's worker owned/operated and HM is as much of a staple of the community as the street it sits on (Fruitvale Ave) itself. You can tell from the mural on the side of the building that they aren't just a part of the community. They embody everything the neighborhood and the people born and raised here stand for and always will. What gets misconstrued as hate is just a deep empathy and love for the most marginalized members of our community and that's what I love most about this place. It...
Read moreNegative reviews are based on political differences. Just in case you're wondering why it's got such a low score. Honestly, I'd probably give it 4 stars but want to balance out the negative reviews a bit.
I won't get into the political debate. But it was a nice local spot. It didn't feel expensive or exclusive, which I think it is the whole point. Simple, accessible, with plenty of space and great light. They have tables for laptops and tables for conversation. I appreciate that. I parked on the street, don't think there was a lot. Had no trouble finding parking.
Coffee was very solid. I got an iced decaf latte. Probably not the ideal drink for judging coffee quality, but I it was definitely at or above average compared to Starbucks, etc. Sadly, forgot to take any pictures, but I hope to be back.
I highly recommend stopping in and checking it out. Plan to try the...
Read moreYou may notice that one star reviews are predominantly placed by out-of-towners. You can tell in their review history. These are people with a Fox News style anti-leftist ideology who are upset about Hasta Muerte choosing to not welcome officers in uniform at their shop. They've never even set foot in the place.
Five star reviews are most often left by locals. This is because the place is unpretentious, friendly, hosts community events, sells fair trade coffee, and has great coffee and empanadas. Family friendly, has a kids play area. Worker owned, so workers earn fair pay. We value all these things in Oakland, so we value Hasta Muerte. No one should be deterred and everyone is welcome. Blue uniforms can make a lot of people uncomfortable these days... its fairly common for people to feel less safe around police officers, so Hasta Muerte is...
