Read moreI ordered here before the autumn lights festival at Lake Merritt to show my mom an Oakland classic Mac & Cheese spot, as she was visiting from out of town. We ordered a BBQ Mac and a chicken pot pie Mac and walked there from my place. When we arrived, I spoke to the waitstaff about what we were up to for the night, and how we were commuting to the festival by bus. The waitstaff had said that there were little cookies that had been added to our bag because it was around Halloween, which was a very sweet touch, and then he also said since my mom was visiting, that we had to try one of the lemonades they sell so we can enjoy our meal at the festival. I bought one, and since they were closing soon, he gave us another one on the house. We went to the festival and enjoyed our meal under all the lights with such warm hearts and happy stomachs. With this, I go back time and time again because I have such fond memories of someone caring about us during a short interaction at a to-go based restaurant. It really is the little interactions that make someone remember a place, and want to go back and suggest a place to every friend!
Beyond this, I’ve ordered here for delivery endless times. It helped me as a comfort food through neurosurgery, nursing school, and the pandemic. Oddly enough, I’ve never eaten there in person! I look forward to a day that I can experience the restaurant itself! I don’t know if there is anything on the menu I cannot recommend. My friends and I have tried it all!...
Read moreI have been going to Homeroom since my sister transferred to Mills back in 2011.
It was then that I fell in love for the first time. I was 13.
Since then I have visited every chance I’ve gotten. I’ve introduced everyone I care about in life.
I’ve never lived in the area, but would make the trek over to Oakland regularly when I was attending college in NorCal. I moved out of state for grad school back in 2020 but make a point to get my fix every time I’m in CA.
I love Homeroom so much that my sister bought me the cookbook way back in the day and now it is a regular staple I cook at home. My favorite from the beginning and forever more will be the Sriracha mac (which is no longer on the menu but does reside in the cookbook!). However, I also adore the Vermont White Cheddar mac.
My partner’s favorite is the Mexican mac.
I love Homeroom so much that when they had a contest to create a new mac a few years back, everyone who knew me was like, “YOU HAVE TO APPLY.”
So I created the Tikka Mac-sala, which was a menu item for a while. This remains one of my proudest accomplishments.
All this to say, if you haven’t tried Homeroom, you haven’t lived. Every mac is mind-melting and it was my introduction to the word “foodgasm.”
Additionally, the staff are so welcoming and kind and the atmosphere is relaxing and chill.
There’s a reason they just hit their 14th...
