Dickey's Barbecue Pit — Restaurant in Oakwood

My wife Mel and I wanted to try someplace new to compare it to our local go-to bbq in Flowery Branch GA. Dickey's Barbecue Pit was a very pleasant surprise as the pulled pork was delicious and we were both served a healthy portion for my pork plate and Mel's #3 pulled pork sandwich combo 😋, enough where she will have the leftover for lunch. The fried okra side was a winner 🏆. My bbq beans and cabbage slaw was good but not really special. It took about 20 minutes to get served once the order was placed but the two prep help were working on other orders that seemed to be families that had ordered before us but they were friendly and helpful and even stayed 10 minutes past the 8pm Tues closing time to accommodate us newbies. We'll definitely return and we took a flier for possible catering events at our local business. We even thought out loud that it would be great to have a Texas BBQ style place like this right outside our neighborhood! We've always wanted to try this place. Today was the day. Our son took us there for dinner. Well, it might not have been a good day for the 2 young men working by themselves. They didn't write our orders down, kept asking us what we ordered repeatedly & by the time our son got his food, ours was cold. Their fountain drink machine was out of order. They Said we could get a can soda, but no refills. We could get tea with refills , but they ran out of tea! These 2 Youngs guys were very personable & even gave my wife another order of baked beans when she didn't like the jalapeño beans. They were friendly, upbeat & done a great job with what they had to work with!! I will say that they don't actually smoke the meat at their location!! I watched one of them cut open a packaged smoked Brisket & cut slices off it!!! I have never been to a BBQ joint that doesn't smoke its meats at their location. So bravo to those 2 guys!! Gave this place another shot after extremely poor experiences a few years ago. Looks to be under new ownership. It was better. I can't say that the pulled pork was great, but just ok, about what you'd expect from a major chain restaurant/franchise. The pork sandwich was ok, nothing special, the meat was a bit dry and without much flavor but they season (lots of salt) to make up for the lack of quality and the results were fine, again decent but not by any means great BBQ, but that's not why you go here. At the price point they're charging, which is too high for the quality of product delivered, you'd can do far better other places, but it wasn't terrible. Not a great value overall, and how dead the place is might be a reflection of the mediocre quality and value, but still not the worst. Can't say there's much reason to go back, but I wouldn't explicitly tell anyone to avoid it other than there's far better options charging the same $ nearby for a higher...
