What a great little place!
Ever since I was a child I loved doughnuts, who doesn't? Lol! Well I like to think that my love for doughnuts is something special instilled in me by my Mawmaw (that's WV slang for Grandma).
When I was a small child my mom would take me to visit my Mawmaw at the diner she worked at where they made fresh doughnuts. I would get a fresh warm doughnut everyday, in my mind it felt like everyday but I know it really wasn't. My Mawmaw has since passed but I can't eat a doughnut without thinking of her.
Fast forward to adulthood. My husband and I bought a little house in Oberlin not knowing much about the community. Then one day he took me into Gibsons and told me about their long standing history in this lovely community.
So of course I had to try their pastries and explore the little shopping area. Where randomly I found a light bulb for the oven that I kept forgetting to buy everytime I went out. They also have fresh made chocolates, other candies, and they serve ice cream! They even make candy canes around Christmas.
I frequent this place for their pastries and coffee though. I fell in love with the cinnamon rolls, which sell out nearly everyday and rather fast. My husband loves the double chocolate cookies, which are also sold out often. Then my father-in-law, who lives with us, loves the apple fritters.
I like to stop after dropping my daughter off at school not very long after they open. I get myself and my father-in-law a pastry. If they have the double chocolate cookies I make sure to get one to surprise my husband with for after work. He has learned that if there is a white pastry bag on the stove top that it's his special cookie from Gibsons!
This little place which has been family owned and operated since 1885 is so very cute. It's always the same friendly faces that greet me. Each time I visit there are people in and out. The place seems to stay pretty busy. It's always such a pleasure to visit. There is something for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI can't tell if they read these reviews or not. Some of the complaints I had in my last review were addressed, but they are bringing in a new wave of rude.
I'm developing a habit of Aladdins, then Gibsons for ice cream. They do have a good selection of healthful desserts, and a lot of stuff crammed into the store.
They addressed some of the cleaning issues that were present before, but these people are so rude. Walked in, three people behind counters. The cashier just glares, the ice cream person doesn't acknowledge, and the third person by the candy doesn't even notice someone walked in.
Getting to the register after selecting our items, the cashier literally says nothing but the price. She asks the other person ignoring us how to do it (how I infer she is new), rings it up, and says the price. I asked for a receipt to get the name but their 1978 register doesn't include that.
Every time I am here, these people seem to get ruder, hate their jobs more, and further go out of their way to disregard the customer. If I had ANY other choice in service, I would go there. Heck, I may start pilgrimaging to Walmart to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAs a current student at Oberlin, I am deeply disappointed in the actions of the administration and just want to say that many students I know also support Gibson's and are pleased with the outcome. Now, as for my visit a few weeks back, I have mostly positive feedback but also a little bit of a grievance. The food was phenomenal. I do not remember having better donuts and pastries. The produce was a tad bit pricey but it's nothing egregious. Overall highly recommended for anyone. My complaint comes to the somewhat cold shoulder I felt I was getting from the employees. I went in to get some products and I immediately felt as if I was being judged simply for being a student of the college. I felt just a bit uncomfortable but I didn't mind it too much. I tried to be friendly but was kind of ignored. Now I'm not trying to be soft or something like that but I did feel a sense of prejudice against me for simply being an Oberlin student. Idk maybe that's just a false perception, and I hope that my future visits will...
