Sukoy Hibachi Express — Restaurant in Ocoee

I'm a bit torn in writing this review after my first time trying out Sukoy Hibachi Express. First, let me say, the lunch special is a steal at $10, which included my choice of hibachi shrimp, fried rice and sautéed veggies. The ingredients were high quality (jumbo shrimp!), and it was super fresh, and very tasty!! If not for the next part, I'd be giving this place an easy 5 stars, without hesitation!

I had also intended, because the prices are so reasonable, to order a California sushi roll, along with my hibachi lunch. EXCEPT, I looked over to the sushi chef prep area, which was staffed by the sushi chef, currently making a sushi roll for another customer before me, and I noticed he was using his bare hands to make the sushi.

Now... I realize that food handling laws, and certain prep practices, allow for SOME foods to be handled without gloves, as long as hands are properly washed without touching anything else, AND the foods being touched have not yet been cooked (meaning any cooking would kill any pathogens).

FL food handling law is clear - if a chef/preparer is handling ANY foods that are already cooked and/or "ready-to-eat," as in all components of CA roll (since there is nothing left to be cooked, and all parts are "ready-to-eat," with the exception of putting it all together), then the food preparer MUST use either food service gloves or utensils to handle the food components, but NEVER bare hands!!

So I honestly thought to myself, ok, I'm not ordering the CA roll for sure, BUT, then what I saw while I was eating my lunch at a table made me kind of never want to go back there again, despite how good my hibachi lunch was. That same sushi chef, was hunkered down (between customers, I assume) using his cell phone with the same bare hands, AND using his bare hands to wipe his brow under his baseball cap!! Then he immediately set his phone down and went right back to placing the same UNWASHED hands onto the sushi prep board, and started grabbing the food components for the next sushi roll he was making!?! WHO DOES THAT?!? (I was sitting immediately to his right, just on the other side of the soda machine, so I could easily see him past the soda machine, hunkered down on his cell phone, where most other customers wouldn't have been able to tell what he was doing.

NO ATTEMPT EVEN TO WASH HIS HANDS before handing the food customers were about to place in their mouths. A clear violation of FL food handling laws... and just plain gross!!

I am embarrassed I didn't say anything to the manager, but it was a small place and I didn't want to create a scene, so I will be calling to talk to the mgr/owner, in addition to submitting this unfortunate review.

I'm still giving this place a solid 3 stars for the very high quality, fairly priced lunch special (which I could see them prepping in the semi-open kitchen, using proper food handling techniques. But I had to knock off 2 stars for poor, unsafe, unhealthy food practices as far as the chef and prep table went. Like I said, I am torn, because the rest of the food was very good... but I can't overlook so blatantly poor and unhealthy food handling practices, so I'm unlikely to ever go there again. Awesome sushi! I took my mom out for lunch, she wanted sushi and I wanted hibachi but somehow ignored the 'express' part in the title that I almost left when we walked in because its a take-out spot. Since she didnt mind we took a chance and stayed, which I'm so glad we did! I ordered the Russian & Titanic specialty rolls and they were AMAZING! You could taste how fresh the ingredients were. The steak hibachi was good too. I added shrimp and noodles, surprisingly the shrimps were jumbo so it was all a great value. The white/orange sauce could use a little work but the food was so good, it didn't need it. We will definitely be back to try the other rolls. Thank you Sukoy! My mom...

Food is freshly made and taste delicious! The sushi chef for last night was top notch and will keep me coming back. We ordered spider roll, California roll, miso soup and chicken hibachi. Everything was delicious! The employees and owner are very nice so it’s a huge bonus. We liked the food so much we got extra to take home for the next day! You can dine in and they will bring the food to your table or you can get take out. The take out boxes are even good quality, no spills or anything even after my five year old carried the bag and food was sitting sideways the whole time. We will surely be back and recommend...
