I stopped at the drive through at the 8th Street JumBurrito location in Odessa, Texas today. I could overhear the conversation the woman in the car in front of me with the drive through worker. It was obvious the worker had a significant speech impediment manifesting as a moderate stutter. The voice suggested the worker was a quite young male. His attempts to take the order indicated he was new at the job, possibly his first, and somewhat insecure.
As I listened, I heard the customer deriding the worker, almost sneering, as she was rude and hurtful, making painful comments that were totally unnecessary. Yet, the worker continued to do his job to the best of his ability, even down to thanking the rude woman for her patronage.
As I took my turn ordering into the speaker, the first thing I did was tell the young man I heard how horrible the customer before me was, and that he was doing a great job. That small kindness caused the stutter to become less severe. The young man gained confidence and became better at his job.
At the window, the store manager took my payment, and beaming a huge smile, thanked me for my patronage. It was obvious she had heard my interaction with her worker and was pleased. I was asked to pull into a parking spot, as my order would be a few minutes to prepare. Guess who brought my order to me? I asked the young man if he was the one who took my order, and he was. I told him he should be proud of being a productive member of society. I told him that I, a combat hardened Infantryman, saluted his courage in taking a job where his speech difficulties are on such public display, and his professionalism when dealing with such rude, difficult customers. I could see him visibly swell with newfound self-confidence. I think this might have been his first day, because a woman parked nearby called him by name after he finished his business with me. She may have been his mother, judging by the look of gratitude she shot toward me, and the pride she displayed in the young man.
Now I know children can be cruel, but adults - especially those in middle age or older - should have the common sense to encourage people to be their best and to avoid unnecessary hurtful speech. A single simple act of kindness can change a life, especially that of a young person. I applaud that nameless young man who struggled through his difficulties to perform his honorable job. I also applaud the JumBurrito corporate management for developing an organizational culture that includes people with disabilities. Finally, I applaud that local JumBurrito manager who took a chance on that young man, giving him an opportunity to grow and become an asset to the American society.
Thank you for being more than just another burrito place,...
Read moreYesterday morning, I visited your location while in town from Austin to surprise my cousin with her favorite burritos. I placed two separate orders: one ticket with four ground beef and cheese burritos, and a second ticket for a stew meat and avocado burrito with queso. I even shared with the cashier how excited my cousin would be when I surprised her, as I was en route to the airport to return to Austin.
The cashier handed me a bag containing both orders. Upon arriving in Austin and opening the bag, I was shocked to discover that instead of the ground beef and cheese burritos, I had received two bacon, egg, and cheese burritos and one bean and cheese burrito—none of which I ordered.
I called the restaurant to advise them of the situation. The same cashier remembered me, was sincerely apologetic, and confirmed my order number and what was supposed to be in the order. She explained that the manager was not present but would relay the issue once she returned so I could be issued a refund.
Later, I received a call stating the manager required photos of the incorrect items before a refund could be processed. When I asked to speak directly with the manager, she stated there was no record of the order number or items that I received, and that no one else had called to complain of receiving a incorrect order. As if that matters!! I found this response baffling and unacceptable—especially after the cashier had already confirmed the order details.
As a restaurant owner myself, I find it extremely concerning that a customer with a valid order number, a confirmed mistake, and a credible explanation would be treated with such doubt and lack of professionalism. The manager’s behavior—refusing to take responsibility, requiring unnecessary proof, then hanging up on me—was completely inappropriate.
Ultimately, the cashier called back to inform me that the manager agreed to issue a full refund. However, it was disappointing that the manager did not have the courtesy to call me directly to resolve the matter.
I hope this feedback is taken seriously. While the cashier handled the situation with grace and professionalism, the manager demonstrated poor judgment, a lack of customer service skills, and an unwillingness to own the restaurant’s error. I will not be returning to this location, and I hope retraining in customer relations is considered...
Read moreFirst time here! I ordered the 2 taco Taco plate which is served with Beans, Rice and a homemade tortilla.Their choices are Beef or Chicken. The tacos are garnished with lettuce, cheese and tomato. You can add guacamole for an extra charge. We chose to dine in.
My fiance ordered a Large Stew Meat burrito that is cooked down and rendered to a mouthwatering tenderness. Served with beans, meat of choice (stew meat or ground beef), cheese and guacamole. My fiance ordered it with no guacamole.
We were not impressed.
The 2 taco plate was served with 2 small tacos, a tiny sprinkle of cheese, lettuce and a lot of diced tomatoes. (I forgot to ask them to hold the tomatoes). The portions of beams and rice are of a child's portion size. They forgot my tortilla. The server fetched me one before I could ask him so that was cool. The Beef was not seasoned well. The taco shells are not homemade and tasted old. It could just be the brand of taco shells they use. I did not care for them at all. The beans and rice are poorly seasoned and were dry and bland. We added salt and pepper to both. The hot sauce which is green, was very tasty and hot so that was a plus. The tortilla was delicious.
My fiance's burrito was made with guacamole when he asked for meat and cheese only. They corrected the mistake promptly. He stated the the burrito was okay buy not delicious.
We ordered chips and hot sauce. We did not receive the pint of hot sauce that we paid for. The chips were the thickest chips we've had since we moved to Texas 2 years ago.
The cashier was not friendly and we were not greeted. The atmosphere was out dated and dingy. All the tables we tried to sit at were dirty so we picked the least dirty of them. The floors were dirty as well. It could have been due to the lunch rush.
Overall, the prices are cheap because the love or thought put into the food is cheap.
Based on the quality/quantity of food, the out dated atmosphere, unfriendliness of the staff and the lack of thought or love put into their food, I would not recommend...
