First, I'd like to say that the server I had at this establishment was fairly good and provided pretty good service. That's what gave the second star. Aside for the server, the experience was, frankly, mediocre and way over priced. I ordered a steak with shrimp, mashed potatoes and the hot apple pie. I also had two mixed drinks. Let me start with the drinks. First, the old fashioned. It wasn't an old fashioned. It was bottom shelf bourbon with some simple syrup. The cherry used was the entirely wrong one and no oranges in sight. Server did say they were out of oranges but not until after the drink hit the table. And there was, at best, three mostly melted ice cubes. Second was the Kentucky mule with an upgraded bourbon. I had to order a shot of that bourbon to actually make the drink palatable. Now for the food. Instant mashed potatoes with powdered brown gravy mix. I understand stock shortages but if you say they are home made, they better be home made. The steak. A 27 dollar filet. First, it wasn't a filet mignon. It was a tenderloin cut. Also, if your cooks don't know how to do a bacon wrapped steak, don't do the bacon wrap. I ordered it medium rare to medium. What I got was a well done, singed steak with raw bacon pasted to the side. I will say that the server did offer to have it made again but I did turn her down, as I frankly didn't think a second edition would provide better results, given the condition of the experience to that point. And I have a problem wasting a 27 dollar cut of beef. The shrimp were ok. Nothing special. Just ok. The bread was alright. No complaints there but it wasn't anything artisan. At the end, I had the hot apple pie. That was the highlight of the evening. It was genuinely good.
All this for 115+ dollars before tip. I probably won't be back. It was a Monday and the place was pretty empty. If that's what I can expect when the cook staff has all the time in the world to do it right, I shudder to think what a Friday rush...
Read moreThis was the worst food I have ever eaten in my life !!!! I was excited seeing on the menu the “pan grilled” chicken fried steak since most places where we are from , Fort Worth metro they ask deep fry them . I was super happy to find a places that cooked it the right way!! So when I got my plate first thing I did was take a hit of the mashed potatoes, the top of the potatoes was crystallized and crunchy like it was either not mixed from the powder potatoes all the way OR they were super old potatoes and had been sitting in the air. This was with every single bite that was in the outter part of the mashed potatoes. I was like okay well the potatoes aren’t mixed ir really old. Second thing I did was take a bit of the fried okra, another one of my favorites. Every single bite, every one of them, the okra was tough!!!! How!????? I loved fried okra and eat it everywhere I go that offers okra but here every single piece was tough!! Like an uncooked raw green bean! I couldn’t figure it out . Sad face , as fried okra is my favorite and it was really disappointing. Last I cut of a piece of the dried chicken, again!!! Every single dang bite was tough!!! Ughhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! Every bite!!! So it wasn’t a fluke every bite was freken tough ! I liked that the steak had very little breading and I can tell it was pan grilled….. that what was so sad. It could have been a really good steak but the was it was cooked or the cut of meat I don’t know it was so tough!! Everything I ordered was horrible and I never complaine. I don’t leave reviews, I’m so laid back I most of the time go with it but here is the kicker , my poor husband who had a steak from here with me last night , got food poisoning and has been up all night puking. They really honestly just need to close this place day. It took our money, and made my husband sick. Just close the doors. ...
Read moreReview - Legendary Barn Door Odessa From what I hear from family, this place has been around for a very long time. It used to make good quality food. Under new management and an overhauled menu this place seems to have missed a few steps over the years. We went on a Tuesday at lunch. I had the Crusted Pork Ribeye with Loaded Mashed Potatoes. It had a little spiciness to it and was cooked moist and all the way through. I had sweet tea with limes and it was as good as Bill Miller's sweet tea, which is VERY GOOD. My girl had the Sirloin steak with Mashed Potatoes and the Mac & Cheese. Steak was good but she didn't like the Mac n Cheese and I thought it tasted out of a box. Not terrible but could be improved on. The day we went the waitstaff gave us OLD menus but didn't tell us but told us that the buffet selections were slim so we asked for the manager. She was pleasant and courteous but she did bring out a handwritten list of the food choices that WERE available. Lack of selection for the lunch buffet did not give us a good vibe; but the couple we were with enjoyed it. I was relieved that most of the food items here very good. Although, sitting under the awning, the AC did not hit us at all and we were sweating. Terrible. This is the only restaurant I've been to where the restrooms were colder than the dining area. Maybe it was the table we were given. Most of the food we ate at this place, was very tasty. This place has some of the best eats here in Odessa. Decor is West Texas, for sure. Staff were very nice and pleasant. The manager Gina (sp?) was sweet and cordial. No Veterans discount. No discounts on any of the dishes offered, but that's OK. I am not from Odessa, but the couple we were with are, so, we won't be revisiting this place any time soon. But, IF we do, I will try a...
