Decided to try this restaurant out this past Sunday. It was not busy at all, so we were seated immediately. Waiter came over after a few minutes and took our order. I ordered pancakes, my husband ordered a breakfast burrito. Waiter told us he had a blueberry danish available and my husband ordered that with his meal. Lots of time passes and we realize that several tables that came in after us were receiving their food. When we tried to ask about it, the waiter indicated he was going to get our food and would be right back. He arrived with both meals but no danish. In all honesty, we expected that to come out first since it was already made. He apologized and brought out the danish and quickly left. This was not a blueberry danish but an orange one. No big deal, mistakes happen, but my husband preferred blueberry. My pancakes were also cold. Like not even slightly warm. Manage to get the waiter’s attention and he says he’ll replace them. It seemed to me that my pancakes were ready long before my husband’s burrito and they were just sitting out waiting. A waitress brings out the “new” pancakes and we mention that in addition, the danish is the wrong flavor. She apologizes and says she’ll be right back. But then she proceeded to wait on other tables, she never came back with the danish. I also realized that I was not given new pancakes, these were my original ones that they must have put back on the griddle to warm up. The one bite I had taken out of the first pancake was missing so I had no doubt these weren’t new. At this point, I was losing patience. Manage to get the waiters attention and he agrees that they should have made new pancakes. When I brought up the still missing danish, he told us he misspoke initially and there were never any blueberry danishes available. But he never told us until we asked. I eventually got new pancakes and they were pretty good but my experience was ruined by everything that happened.
In summary, I felt like the service here was below par. Waiters never checked in on us, not even for drink refills. We had to call someone over whenever we needed someone. The danish situation would have been no big deal if he had just told us up front they didn’t have it. Instead he just gave my husband a different flavor and didn’t mention it. Did he think my husband didn’t know the difference between blueberry and orange? And the pancake issue; I feel like a mistake was made with my husband’s order and they had to remake it. But didn’t think to even try to keep my food warm or just bring it out and say my husband’s food needed a few minutes. When watching everyone who came in after us be served their food, clearly something was up and no one was telling us. To have also had the waitress say she’d fix the danish issue, yet never return to our table was extremely rude and showed a lack of care on her part.
The staff at this location did a terrible job at communicating with us as customers. Instead of telling us something was wrong, they pretended like nothing happened, seemingly hoping we wouldn’t notice. I don’t think we gave off any vibes to indicate we were going to freak out if something went wrong so I’m unsure of why honesty in this situation was so difficult. Eventually the waiter apologized, but not until the end of the meal when I showed him the reheated pancakes. No apologies for the food taking so long in the first place, miscommunication and never checking in on us.
My husband really liked his food so willing to try again. The waiter stated this experience was not the normal so I hope that’s true. He did remove the pancakes and danish from our bill so I appreciate him making that right. In the future, I hope the staff here is able to improve upon their communication skills otherwise I’m not hopeful the next experience will...
Read moreThere's a nice concrete ramp available in addition to steps. This is a wide open place with plenty of room between tables. There is quite a bit of echo in there, so it is noisy. We found we had to speak pretty loudly for those across the table from us to hear. We can imagine people having to shout when it's a full house. This can be by design, but I don't know if it was their intention here.
There's plenty of light from two long walls of windows in the form of big glass roll-up garage doors . It was pretty warm inside the day we visited. The dining chairs are the bent tubular steel kind, springy and comfortable with upholstered cushions. There are also some conversation areas with long, minimalist upholstered sofas. We wished these were a little taller. It would be great if they would add some comfy seats that stand a bit higher for those with mobility challenges.
Our servers were friendly and engaging. We waited just shy of 30 minutes for half our party's order. The two members of our party who ordered food that did not require cooking were served their orders right away. However, they were not given silverware so couldn't eat. No one stopped by to acknowledge the delay on our order or to check to see if anyone needed anything. When we flagged down a different server to ask for silverware, we asked about our omelets. We waited a half hour for our omelets altogether.
That said, the omelettes were nicely plated, fresh and hot, with shredded Swiss cheese, fresh mushrooms, and spinach. The fresh fruit I subbed for the potatoes was great. It was fresh watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries. I especially liked how the watermelon was cut into small pieces so it didn't overwhelm the other flavors. The hash browns were disappointing, not crispy, and a bit undercooked.
The coffee was fantastic. We had a dark roast and loved how smooth it was. It had the great caramelized roasty richness without the bitterness some roasts have. Man that was good coffee! 🤤☕
Overall, we enjoyed our visit and plan on returning. We've missed Caribou coffee and this has a similar comfortable, casual vibe. We love how bright it is. That the seating is so comfortable is a bonus! We could see meeting friends here for board games and drinks. We look forward to checking out some of the...
Read moreI was going to rate 3 stars, but the 4th star was mainly for the roast beef sandwich - VERY good. Moist, incredibly tender beef. We visited on a Sunday around 5pm. EXCELLENT service, but that may have been due in part to the complete lack of customers. Very comfortable atmosphere, more like a coffee house or someone’s living room than a stuffy restaurant; lots of comfy chairs, couches, stools, etc. to choose from. A very limited menu with maybe a dozen choices. I ordered a soft pretzel appetizer (they were out of the fried mushrooms), an asian salad, a soft drink, and my wife had a cocktail and the aforementioned roast beef sandwich with chips. The sandwich was EXCEPTIONAL, and with the exception of the dipping sauce for the pretzel (a floury gravy/cheese mixture we didn’t really care for) the food was… good. The pretzel itself was large, fried, and had a pleasant texture. The salad was good, the cocktail was good. The chips were chips, and the soda was soda. Again, the service was great - attentive and very friendly, and on top of things at all times. The problem was the prices. We chose some of the cheapest options on the menu, which amounted to more of a light lunch, and still spent $50 plus tax and tip. Most of that was the cocktail- $13 - a definite splurge on our date night, and costing as much as my wife’s sandwich. I don’t think this would be the place for us to have a real meal; the 12oz ribeye dinner alone would have been $37. There was obviously vast amounts of money spent on the decor and rebuilding of this historic location, and the fabulous interior certainly reflects that. And if you’re looking for an upscale place to grab drinks and splurge on a limited menu, you could do far worse than the Earthworks- we highly recommend...
