A Disappointing Takeout Experience in Okeechobee

As someone who genuinely enjoys Chinese cuisine in all its forms — from traditional regional specialties to American-Chinese comfort classics — I always approach a new takeout spot with an open mind and an eager palate. Unfortunately, my recent experience at this particular establishment in Okeechobee left much to be desired.

Let’s start with the basics: I spent just under $54 on a variety of dishes, including a large orange chicken, a large house lo mein, a combo platter (presumably General Tso’s chicken), two extra egg rolls, and what was supposed to be a standard assortment of takeout staples. The combo was to include fried rice, an egg roll, and a single crab rangoon. Oddly enough, I was also charged $3.95 for a beef dish I neither ordered nor received — a detail I only caught once I got home and reviewed the receipt.

Packaging and presentation were unfortunately the first red flags. All items were crammed into a single flimsy plastic bag, each in leaking Styrofoam containers. By the time I got them home, the sauces and juices had mixed into a chaotic mess, coating the food — and my passenger seat — in a sticky residue. The crab rangoon, in particular, was a casualty; completely soaked and robbed of its subtle flavor. Ironically, the egg rolls may have benefitted slightly from the sauce-saturation, as they were otherwise bland, consisting mostly of cabbage with no discernible pork or seasoning.

The house lo mein was perhaps the most jarring surprise — not only was it made with spaghetti noodles, but it also contained only chicken, despite being labeled as a “house special.” No pork, no beef, no shrimp. Just a tangle of uninspired noodles that lacked both authenticity and flavor. The chicken fried rice was equally disappointing, lacking the distinct wok-kissed texture and seasoning that defines even the most basic version of the dish.

That said, not everything was a misfire. The orange chicken and the General’s chicken were actually quite good — crispy without being overly battered, with sauces that hit the right notes of sweet, tangy, and spicy. The kitchen clearly has potential when it comes to their proteins, and I appreciated that the General’s chicken was made with a respectable level of heat, as requested.

Unfortunately, these two bright spots weren’t enough to redeem the overall experience. Between the questionable packaging, missing items, lack of attention to detail, and misrepresentation of dishes, I can’t say I’ll be returning — at least not for a full meal. If anything, I might consider grabbing just the orange chicken or General’s chicken to go… assuming I bring my own containers.

Okeechobee isn’t exactly brimming with options for Chinese food, which makes this all the more disappointing. I truly wish the experience had lived up to the potential hinted at in those two dishes. Sadly, it didn’t. Two stars — and that’s entirely thanks to...

I really wanted to LOVE this place as I miss good chinese food.

If you want Ice Cream or Candy, come here! The ice cream looked amazing!

However - the food was disappointing. It was a fast food version of what Chinese food should be & quite unimpressive.

The cashew chicken was drowned in thick, bland brown sauce, which took all of the flavor and color away from the dish. It didn't have any of the veggies I would expect, such as big chunk of onion, yellow bell pepper, broccoli & fresh cut carrot & celery, rather it was made with a generic thawed peas/carrot mixture (carrots in perfect cubes, not sliced fresh) and mushrooms. Sigh. The fried rice was a dark brown small grain, but didn't have any soy sauce flavor so I am very confused by what it was cooked in. It also had the generic thawed peas/carrot mixture. The egg rolls has obviously been sitting for a while as they were room temp and soggy. It IS an inexpensive place to eat, so I realize we get what we pay for, but just a few small tweaks would make this restaurant so much better and packed! I'd be willing to pay a tad more for a fresh, healthy dish, rather than a fast food version. I'll keep cooking at...

People that comes here and eat and give a 5 🌟 ether they don't cook at home or don't know how good a real Chinese food taste. This restaurants was sold to Spanish people now running the kitchen, look inside the kitchen 😳, I bought a pork fried rice with fried chicken wings, the rice was steam empty rice(only green peas) and wings were seasoned with yellow chicken powder and salt, not crispy or deep fried or better flavor it was nasty and small pieces. I come from NY, BOS and Broward and I can tell when they know how to cook and when they cook just for money 💰 😅. Please visit my town in Oakland Park FL33334. To know a real good Chinese taste! You will love it so much you will drive from Okeechobee just to buy Chinese. I happen to be looking for lands that day and I will never go back to this restaurant 🤮 in Okeechobee. This is the one in my town👉 PAGODA 314 NE 38TH ST OAKLAND PARK FL33334. please when you drive south you have to stop ✋in my town, you will love the taste 😋 The cookers are husband and wife only straight...

THE WORST. We stopped in tonight and found an empty restaurant (clue #1) but we ordered 2 combos and got the food faster than McDs(clue#2) The vegetables in the sweet and sour chicken were cold and raw, the sauce on the beef and vegetables was congealed, the fried rice was burnt so that the taste was there as well as the burnt smell and the egg rolls had a gray unidentifiable meat. And since the only person from walk in, sit down, receive menus, order, get the food and then pay after finding it inedible, was the 12 year old(the only person we saw so when he asks if was ok? NO but can't tell him) left to run the whole front.. shameful...20$ but a valuable lesson on quality of food at Bucios,...ps, the pic is as we left the table because the food was inedible.
