I drive over this side of Memorial rd a lot. I'm a huge fan of Ramen. I always come try the new Ramen restaurant when there is new one pop up. My first experience with Masa today was pretty sad. I like the set up of the restaurant. As i walking hoping for an awsome bowl of Ramen, I had to trace down a server with my eyes to get seated as they walk by ignoring me and perhaps thought i'm just there to get a job. After get seated, the 3 servers walking around unactknowledge of my presence. After 10 mins , a waitress finally get my drink. I ordered a bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen for dinner, Spanish mackerel nigiri, surf clam nigiri, and Sweet Shrimp ( Amaebi ) Nigiri for appertizer. The Ramen came out after not even 5 minutes before my appertizer. Well start with a bowl of Ramen I suppose. The bowl looks like a water well, yeah it's deep but who cares about the bowl. The Ramen came with "over soft boiled marinated egg" , Chashu Pork, Menma, black fungus mushroom, and Pickle Ginger from a package, WHO PUT PICKLED GINER IN TONKOTSU RAMEN BOWL!!! COME ON!!! GINGER IS PALATE CLEANSERR. I COULD NOT TASTE MY RAMEN WITHOUT THE GINGER CLEAN EVERYTHING IN MY MOUTH. First sip with the Tonkotsu broth. The broth looks as brown as the pre-manufactured Tonkotsu Paste from Wismetac Distributer. After first spoon, i'm pretty sure it's pre-made paste mix with water and pork fat. Come to the next piece, the Chashu Pork. It's definitely Frozen Premade Chashu Pork from food distributor that thaw out and threw on a flat top ( If your ramen chef can't make proper Chashu Pork.. fire him). Now is the noodle part... it takes 3-4 mins to boil the noodle in boiling water alone. How do you think the entire bowl is contructed under 5 mins ? Yes frozen semi-instant noodle that thaw out and get soft in the hot broth itself. It's supper soggyyyy. I took 2 bites and did not bother to finish it. After set the Ramen aside, my waitress finally come by and check on my sushi... then came back out and told me they're out of Spanish Mackerel. I canceled that and still going with the surf clam and sweet shrimp. The protein is okay for frozen seafoods. The rice, this is the worst rice i've ever tasted. It was mushy, tangy & little bitter taste from the vinegar ( i dont think the chef can mix the vinegar right). I'm sorry, but base on a chef perspective , this bowl of ramen is a ripoff for $12.50. I would have to give this a 2 stars. The set up saved this from a 1*. I wont mind driving to midtown for a bowl of...
Read moreOne of the first things I noticed upon entering was the bar which broadcasted sports channels on flat screen TVs. Not my cup of tea, really, and it's especially unexpected in a Japanese restaurant. I think it's distracting and takes away from the atmosphere.
Other than that, the place looked nice, with interesting decorations and a relatively calm, distinguished character.
My server was quick and friendly. I enjoyed her laid-back, personable attitude.
I ordered the Takoyaki, the Ninja Roll, and the Bagel Roll. I love to order the Takoyaki whenever I go to a Japanese restaurant; it sets the mood for the rest of the meal. I am pleased to say that the Takoyaki was quite lovely. It had a light, crisp texture, a good taste, and was not too chewy. However, I wasn't a big fan of the fish flakes, and I have seen better eel-sauce-to-mayo ratios before.
The Bagel Roll was pretty good, although it was not spectacular. I enjoyed the Ninja Roll less. I can't say I will order these rolls again. I would give the other rolls a shot.
My bill was $40.19. Would I pay for this experience again? No, no... not really. While my experience was relatively positive, it was nothing home to write about. Just another restaurant in the sea of restaurants out there, offering decent food without any defining characteristics to make the establishment stand out. I must stress, though, the place is quite nice! I suppose it would be nice to check out if you are near the area, or if you had a friend or two (...or three) to...
Read moreI was teetering between two and three stars for this place, but ultimately went for three because I would give this place another chance. We went here while they were still doing their soft opening and it wasn’t bad. We ordered quite a lot of food, and we weren’t overly impressed by most of it. I will say that this is the first takoyaki I’ve truly liked. Very crispy outside, cooked perfectly inside. I enjoyed it! The beef negiyaki was a different story. We ordered it medium rare, CLARIFIED, and it came out well done. It may have been decent if it wasn’t over cooked. The black cod wasn’t cooked properly and the portion was VERY small for the price. The gyoza wasn’t bad. They have homemade shrimp shumai which I was excited about, but pretty disappointed in the flavour and texture. The spicy tuna crispy rice was pleasantly refreshing! It was probably my favorite appetizer. The ramen was probably the biggest disappointment. The broth quite literally tasted like weakly flavoured water. It was hard for us to eat it. The sushi was pretty solid! I can’t remember all the rolls we ordered but three were all pretty solid. I’m not sure I was a fan of the Naruto roll we got but it was well made. They have a good selection of sake and Japanese whiskey. Service was just okay. I might try this place again, would definitely come back for sushi if I was on that side of town but they definitely need to work on the other aspects...
