Not your average donut spot! Not a ditto shop just pushing out the same boring mixes so many others are using. This place clearly making things according to their own formulas. Worth the trip just to taste something a little different.
I tried a variety, risking the wrath of my gluten intolerance to maybe, finally find a fluffy, sweet but not too (painfully) sweet treat. This included a chocolate cake, chocolate glazed with whipped cream filling, and an apple fritter.
The chocolate cake was light and fluffy, good for a sponge style cake. Best was that even glazed, it was not too sweet. The crust retained had a decent crisp dispite being close to closing.
The whipped cream was light as air, not heavy and greasy, with a mild vanilla flavor. The donut shell had a fluffy texture that melted on my tongue. The cocolate glazing was choclately without being so sweet my teeth hurt (like at some other popular places in town). This one was my favorite for this trip and makes me hopeful for the custard filled (Boston Creme). Which they were out of, which I take as a good sign.
Honestly, the apple fritter was nothing special. I am a bit of a snob about fruit to dough ratio and there are places around that have more fruit. It was barely detectable in the one I got. Maybe it was just bad luck. The soft crunchyness of the crispy fritter under the glaze was good. The glaze itself wasn't painfully sweet which makes me excited to try the peach fritter, a popular shop favorite.
My partner had a cinnamon roll, which he said was the best one he has had in OKC, but that the cinnamon could have been spread more evenly. Sweetness was spot on.
There was a decent drink selection for how small the cooler is. Sodas and other shelf stable drinks might not always be cold if they were recently loaded. And they do have a wide variety of coffee creamers kept in a minifridge for patrons to make good use of.
Service was fast and friendly.
There isn't space to enjoy your pastry selections. This is 100% a grab and go location. The shop is nothing fancy, without some of the common things many people have come to expect from larger shops.
There is no drive-through, and the space would not accommodate many mobility assistance devices easily, so you might need a friend's help or call the shop for options if this is a concern.
Overall, this shop does a good job doing what they do, making good donuts that are anything but average. There are no frills that have kept prices low. Even so, I will definitely be back when my...
Read moreA gentleman at church recommended that I try this place. I was intrigued when he told me their donuts are made with potato flour, are big, and the price is reasonable.
When he mentioned that it's owned and operated by a veteran I just had to try it. As a veteran myself I believe in supporting veteran run businesses whenever possible.
The location of Polar Donuts is 12 miles from me. That almost made me reconsider. However, he praised them so highly that Monday morning all I could think about was trying these donuts.
I needed to drive the Thunderbird to blow the carbon out anyway.
It's an '81 and looks appalling but runs well. It had been sitting over a month because it had needed a starter. AAA had just finished up the work, so I got on the freeway and drove down to Meridian and 10th. It was easy to find.
Polar donuts was 20 minutes away, and the drive was fun.
As I walked in I was listening to a Jimmy Smith song on my Bluetooth speaker (Root Down and Get It) and the proprietor handed me a donut and complimented the song. He was a Vietnam veteran and Jimmy Smith music is from that era (60s-70s)
He explained how the donuts were made.
I bought half a dozen and a cup of coffee. I'm an airhead and forgot my coffee but that's because the donuts were so big I got distracted !!!
These donuts are indeed delicious and huge. Everyone was very nice.
The proprietor was very friendly and the business was busy and efficiently run.
The price was fair, and I'd definitely recommend them to anyone no matter how far you must drive for them.
Excellent experience and totally worth the 40 minutes round trip drive. Best donuts I've had in years.
Unfortunately I can't include pictures of the actual donuts because I ate them too fast.
Next time I go I'll be sure to do so!!!
I have included the picture of what I wore to Polar Donuts. One belt pouch has my Bluetooth speaker, the other has my phone, keys, etc.
I'd give more stars if...
Read more2/10/24- adding this to my below review. Normally I send my husband but today I went on Saturday morning around 930am and the girls were just very rude. The donuts didn’t taste as fresh as normally. Maybe they just weren’t made with love that day. Going to a place with rude front workers is such a turn off! I don’t ever expect a freebie but just note that even the donut we were given at walk in time didn’t taste fresh. It was a valentines donut and was just not as moist and delicious as normal. We probably get donuts here 1x a month so I’m very disappointed!!
March 2023ish’- So delicious! Wow! A lady from my work brings donuts sometimes and they are amazing! I tore the little advertisement off the top and took it home and put on my fridge since I wanted to get my kids some! We went this morning and were not disappointed! Hot fresh glazed donuts when we walked in and took a dozen of mixed donuts home! Mmmmmm!!!! Happy kids ♥️♥️🙌🏼🙌🏼 the owner was there and told us about his secret recipe he has had for 30+...
