We have absolutley no understanding, nor do we have any personal experience supporting the multiple Star ratings this place is alegedly getting from its patrons; frankly I question the validity of them. My only thought is that the rating authors may not have dined at a quality Japanese place yet. We gave 4 Stars to the wait staff; very friendly and upbeat. However, the food is awful. A great rename for this place might be the Salt Palace. Salt doesn't hide bad cuisine. The sashimi was low quality, and had a bad look; fish stored at high temperature bad look. It tasted gamey strong; like day old or better. The fried rice ranks up there with a frozen entrée', and it had bizarre seasoning in it; did mention it was too salty. Quality Fried Rice is a mix of rices and should have a nutty taste. This was cheap rice that was a mix of overcooked and undercooked. 'Kara age' (fried chicken) coating was not crispy; its the main point of the dish. This Kara age coating was dusty and dry to the palate, and tasted raw. My wife bets its air-fried; not a good idea. BTW; Kara age is actually spelled Karaage. I debated with the waiter on one of the steaks. This place is across the street from the Japanese Steak house. Got convinced by the waiter to try the ribeye; $44; I ordered Medium Rare. I specifically asked about the thickness of the cut. Anyone who truly loves beef knows that a steak is near impossible to cook when cut too thin. As predicted, the steak was too thin, and as also predicted, still raw under the bad low temp attempt to cook it correctly without missing the medium rare window and landing on well-done. Frankly again, it looked air-fried. Cutting into this steak was impossible. It just slid and stretched on the plate like elastic. it was raw, and the telltale is that the fat hadn't rendered. Hence; just can't cook a thin steak correctly. Calamari was OK, but certainly have had better. Water tasted and smelled like my pool water. Signs of a cut corners place. Filtered water is a must. We ordered bottled water instead. Fried tofu was just cooked wrong. Prepared incorrectly and then cooked in a low heat frier; bet it was air-fried too; horrible outcome. So here is the bill: $66 plus an 18% tip. The wait staff did not cook this mess. We got charged for water; Calamari, Sashimi, Tofu, Saki. Wow! The rest of the food was flat not palatable, and so those dishes were removed from the bill; to the restaurants credit. Our honest assessment is the entire meal was a disaster. SAKI is not meant to be microwaved; when this is done, the ceramic bottle becomes hotter than the Saki. Really an empty suit place trying to be relevant; not at all; so...
Read moreI’m a bit disappointed here. Sushi Neko was one of the only sushi restaurants I hadn’t tried in the OKC/Edmond/Norman area and it just didn’t live up to the hype..
The location is great, the setting is beautiful, service is excellent, but the food was lackluster. I’ve had so many people talk this place up I almost wonder if we just got unlucky with our food? The only thing I liked was the Neko fries. Yes, the last thing you’d expect a sushi restaurant to serve (fries) was the best thing they had to offer. We also got the pork belly appetizer and it just wasn’t good. I expected the fat to be super-crispy-melt-in-your-mouth and it was just cold and chewy, all while the meat itself was pretty tough and dry.
As for the rolls, I like to get the Firecracker wherever I go and compare them to other places (tempura shrimp, avocado, +/- cream cheese, topped with shredded crab mix and sesame seeds, spicy Mayo, etc.). This was by far the worst firecracker roll I’ve had at a sushi restaurant. The tempura shrimp tasted like it was fried yesterday and then refrigerated. Awful! The roll is supposed to be slightly warm due to the freshly fried tempura shrimp. This was cold and seemed old. The shredded “crab” was rubbery and if it hadn’t been for the spicy Mayo I ordered on the side I wouldn’t have even eaten the roll. Did I mention it also cost $18 by itself? Absolutely not worth it. I’ve had a Firecracker roll from Go Go, Kobe, Sake, Volcano to name a few and they were all better (and cheaper) than this one. So disappointing!
For the other two rolls that we got it was the same story. Just lacking so much flavor I was honestly shocked. I imagined I would be blown away when we came here but we ended up disappointed all around. Unfortunately this place is just hype. It’s all about the hip location and the pretty decor, but it was missing the most important thing and that was good sushi. It wasn’t fresh and it wasn’t flavorful. The nicest looking sushi restaurant has some of the...
Read moreThis place changed my mind about sushi. I always thought sushi was too pricey and must be a trendy thing since i couldn't taste the differences in any of the fish. And i have gone to many recommended sushi places in LA and DC.
Anyway, Sushi Neko clearly gets better fish as i could taste the difference between all the different sushi we ordered. We ordered sishimi (just pieces of fish, no rice, not a roll) Yellowtail mackerel (is very fishy) salmon and tuna. But the best was fatty tuna (tuna belly or toro), it's flavor was sublime. And it was expensive ($5 a piece). Anyway, although the sushi was expensive at least i could taste each pieces distinct flavor and texture. i imagine sushi tastes this way in Japan.
I also got a dish with sushi rolls on the bottom and crawfish piled high on top with a red sauce and mayo. Can't remember the name of it but the server will know if you describe it. I saw other people ordering it and i described it and the server knew. Excellent dish to get full on as sashimi isn't meant to make you full.
If i had to have sushi with friends and spend oodles of $, at least this place is legit. And there is enough non sushi on the menu (beyond teriyaki and tempura) like steak and friend rice and noodles, that at least i could eat something with Asian taste and not be locked in to sushi. So while my friends enjoy their sushi, i can enjoy a variety of other things if i so choose that is not as pricey and get full.
I am still not a sushi person because i think it is too expensive in the states, but this place has opened my mind to trying it when i go to Japan.
I have since gone back twice, and I got a steak. Unfortunately it was not good. It was not fresh. It looked delicious, and the sauce was really good. The vegetables served with it was very good. Was a little disappointed but it is a sushi house not a steak joint. Remember that stick...
