Went for an anniversary dinner. Pros first, cons at the end. We asked for a keto tasting menu as my partner suddenly decided to do this diet. The kitchen accommodated.
Most of the items they pulled from the main menu. From the Aperitif menu: Rilette ($11) white fish, beets and creme fraiche. It was their version of a tartare they said. It was very well balanced with flavor and texture. Loved this dish. Daikon ($7) curry, yogurt, egg yolk. I'm not sure if this is a very good description. It certainly is a very unique dish. It was bursting with flavor to the point of being almost overwhelming. If you want a powerful punch, definitely choose this dish. Proscuitto ($11) red onion, radish, carrot. This was a beautifully presented dish, again balanced very well. I preferred the Rilette, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with this one. Black Bass ($17) Lentils, guanciale, cauliflower - Delicious. The cauliflower is slightly sweet. The fish is grilled perfectly. Pork Chop ($25)Turnips, sunchoke, honey. I'm not sure if this dish comes with the beef cheek as well normally, but ours had it.
I'm guessing the tasting menu items the portion might be smaller than if you ordered off the regular menu. It was something I should have asked, but I did not realize at first they were pulling from the main menu. For dessert they did "Casatica di bufala" cheese from Italy as he could not have a sweet. For me this was not a great dessert as I wasn't a huge fan of the cheese, but for someone who's keto, its great! There were small modifications made to the individual dishes listed as well as the food items might have been modified so that it fit into the keto diet better. I appreciated their willingness to accommodate. I believe for $55 the tasting menu is a no brainer. Definitely a fantastic option. All items chosen were great. The chef is obviously talented with a good eye and palate. Service was professional and attentive.
The downsides do not have anything to do with their food or service. If anything it is the lack of parking in the area (mostly street parking). However, that is how it is with most of Benson. I probably would not recommend this place for an anniversary dinner in the future, but it is a great place to go with friends, to have birthday, or most any other occasion. I wouldn't call the atmosphere romantic, but its very friendly with a boisterous environment which can get quite loud at times. We had difficulty hearing our server not from her lack of trying to relay the...
Read moreAu Courant's website says, "Please note, we are willing to accommodate a wide range of dietary restrictions and allergies. Just ask us!" And they mean it!
We dined there last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. It's one of my friend's favorite restaurants and I knew that he loves to do the tasting menu. I also knew that if someone wants to do the tasting menu, the whole table has to do it. I didn't want to ruin his birthday, but I also knew I wouldn't be able to do that - I follow a really strict anti-inflammatory diet due to a chronic health condition. When I told our waitress that I had really specific dietary restrictions, she was so gracious in asking what they were, wrote down what I couldn't have, asked great follow up questions, made some suggestions, went back to talk to the chef/kitchen, and quickly came back with some great ideas tailored for me. Everyone else at the table still got to do the tasting menu. My food was fantastic. I still got to participate in the "Au Courant" experience – I had a beet salad with strawberries, onions and micro greens; duck breast with sweet potato puree, and charred raddichio with radish; a lemon, basil mocktail from the bar; and a raspberry sorbet for dessert. They bring another tiny dessert with the check and she even had a suggestion of something special they could do for me. But I was too full and declined. :) But I was touched that they wanted to include me right to the end of the meal. I really didn't expect that!
I am used to my only options being something like a plain chicken breast and iceberg lettuce, or maybe a steak and steamed broccoli. But I actually got to eat interesting food and felt good the next day! So, I just wanted to share my experience for other people who may have dietary restrictions. You can actually eat at Au Courant. They're willing to get creative for you and you can tell they are happy to do it.
I can't say enough about how nice that was. Going to a new restaurant can be anxiety inducing when you follow a special diet. You never know if a place will be accommodating, if the kitchen will mix things up, if you're going to feel sick or just off the next day, or if the staff will make you feel like you're being annoying or high maintenance. Our waitress was amazing - so kind and helpful. And we had a great time celebrating my...
Read moreThis is an old review - but I figured with Valentine's right around the corner why not post it!
I've been wanting to try Au Courant for quite some time, and seeing as I waited just a hair too long to make my Valentine's reservations, I was happy to see Courant still had some late-night tables open.
To start things off, the location was perfect. A Valentine's feast, with an adult entertainment store right across the street? How much better can it get
The atmosphere inside the building is fantastic. It plays on the exposed brick/mortar feel you get all over Benson and is just beautiful aesthetically. I love the giant wax towers throughout the restaurant from hundreds of melted candles all slowly dying. Sadly, my girlfriend won't allow me to do the same around the house
We did arrive a bit early for our reservation, and were informed that things were running a little behind. No worries, we hit the bar and ordered some drinks. Our drinks at the bar were actually comped, and we were given several glasses of sparkling wine without us breathing a word of complaint. Customer service top notch guys, keep it up. Even without the free drinks we would have no qualms, it's Valentine's, you're slammed, perfectly understandable.
Once we were seated, the courses started rolling out. The majority of the dishes and drinks were explain to us, but again, busy night, no worries. I could only assume on a normal business night you get that much better of service and explanations with your food.
Now, to the food itself! I've posted the menu for those curious on what it was we ate. I will say the star of the show in my opinion was the pork sugo gnocchi. The gnocchi was flawless, and the pork sugo was richz flavorful, and absolutely delightful. The dessert "dippin dots" were fun and delicious, and I wish I could have left with a stack of the little nougat bites that came out with the bill.
Did I mention the Chovys Egg? Good lord, can I get three or four next time?
One of the top spots in Omaha, without a doubt. Thanks for a...
