We visited on February 4, 2021. We were in the area running an errand and decided to drive through and order some food. This was our first visit and we let the cashier know that we would be a minute as we checked out the menu before placing our order. We were feeding four adults and a 14-year-old… So we decided to go with the family feast plus order a variety of sides so we could taste many items. The family feast included a full rack of ribs, 1 pound of meat, three sides and four rolls. The four rolls are Rotella hamburger buns. I thought they were actually rolls. For the 1 pound of meat we chose the brisket. You cannot choose point or flat, as it is chopped brisket. For the three sides that came with the meal, we chose all three sides as their baked beans. We also ordered a quart of potato salad, mac & cheese and potatoes and gravy. We ordered four extra rolls, again believing they were just dinner rolls. At the bottom of the sign they mention that they had smoked ham by the pound. So we decided to try a pound of sliced smoked ham. We asked for extra mild sauce on the side and our order came to just over $101.
Now, the verdict. Nobody was very happy with the meal across the board. First, the ribs, chopped brisket and sliced ham were all very dry. The slices of ham had dried up burnt edges like you see if you put it in the microwave to heat it and you let it cook too long. The chopped brisket was pretty much inedible, even soaking it in lots of sauce and making it into a sandwich. The ribs were so tender the bones fell right out, but they were also dry. Especially if you were eating end pieces and not a couple of bones from the center. Another thing we noticed about these ribs was that they were full of cartilage. We’ve never seen so much cartilage and fat on a rack of ribs. Ribs are usually my favorite portion of a meal and I did not even eat more than a couple of bites. The mac & cheese resembles a less cheesy version of KFC mac & cheese. Very mushy and lacking cheesiness. I absolutely loved the baked beans. My husband was not a fan but everyone else enjoyed them too. We all love potato salad, but it’s got to be cooked. The potatoes in this potato salad were rock hard and way under cooked. The potato salad was inedible as well. Their mild barbecue sauce was sweet and tangy. The mashed potatoes and gravy was pretty good. That ended up being my meal, mashed potatoes and gravy. The mashed potatoes were a little bit dry but they had a nice seasoning in them. I also enjoyed the gravy.
My husband says we need to go ahead and give them another shot but I’m not so sure I want to waste that much money again. I don’t recommend this place at this point but if we do visit again, I will...
Read moreI tried Hog Wild for the 1st time yesterday and it was TERRIBLE. I paid $11.50 and the best part of the meal was the Texas toast, which wasn't all that great either. I would have given this restaurant ZERO STARS if it were possible to do so. This is also the first time I have ever publicly reviewed any restaurant, but I was so disgusted that I had to put in my 2 cents.
The ribs were absolutely tasteless. They tasted and looked as if someone took ribs, poured BBQ sauce on them, and stuck them in an oven. No flavor whatsoever, didn't even taste like there was salt or pepper or anything on the ribs. They were cooked long enough, but not so tender that it is falling off the bone like good BBQ. The brisket was edible, not terrible but not good, just good enough to eat.
I ordered a side of cole slaw and baked beans, and they were both terrible and I couldn't finish either. The baked beans tasted like someone pulled the beans out of chili and served them as baked beans. They didn't taste like baked beans at all, the beans either had chili powder on them or just tasted like it. The cole slaw was dry and tasteless, I took a bite and could barely swallow it because it was so dry. I had to put my own vinegar and spices in it, but it still tasted terrible so I tossed it.
It is clear to me that the owners just have NO PASSION FOR COOKING WHATSOEVER. When I go out to eat, I can usually find ONE thing about the meal that I really enjoyed. I literally found ZERO things to say anything good about their food. The ribs were tasteless, the brisket was barely edible, the baked beans were like chili, and the cole slaw was dry and tasteless. I literally did not finish ONE thing that I ordered... except the Texas toast. TERRIBLE OVERALL EXPERIENCE,...
Read moreSo, Let me preface this with, I'm a born and raised Kansas City native. I'm a bit snobby about BBQ.
With that in mind, Hog Wild does solid Q. On the basis of food alone they are honestly 3 stars. Solid middle of the road, about as good as chains like Dickey's and Famos Dave's, though they are a better value than Dave's. Their BBQ meat on baked potatoes are worth trying, the potatoes are freaking HUGE. Amazing cost/value on those.
So what earns Hog Wild the extra star? Service, they are always nice, easy to talk to, will work with you to get exactly what you want. On the visit I'm basing this review on the guy at the end of the line that passes out the food went WAY above and beyond. I was on my motorcycle and asked if they could bag the food up a bit tighter than usual. He did better than that. He wrapped the meat in tinfoil, then put it and the two side containers (with lids!) all inside another styrofoam container, then when back and wrapped all that in plastic wrap to seal it. That means when I had to put in sideways in the saddlebag it didn't so much as spill a drop of sauce. Additionally he gave me a paper bag and extra plastic bad for my sides of sauce and pickles that I'd gotten from the condiment bar. Oh, and 1 got no less than 3 "Hey man, NICE bike!" from the workers that day.
In conculsion, I've been to Hog Wild, half a dozen times or so and the fast friendly service is a constant. The food is pretty good too, but it isn't...
