Our favorite sushi restaurant in all of San Francisco East Bay Area (Marin County Favorite would be: Sushi Ren).
Anyway, Island Sushi is small, quaint, but a personable experience for us two when we get the sushi craving and want to spend our time in Orinda. Great Service, good prices (under $100 for 2 with beers and saki), but can order a Bento-Box (soup, salad, rice, 3 additional items for $19.95; or 2 items for $16.95). Very favorable sushi, lots of options to choose from (Udon, Donburi, multi-entrees, Nigiri, sashimi, Hans rolls, Mali classic rolls), to where the chefs will make up non-menu authentic sushi for us on request, and we treat the chefs to some saki.
Just across the street from Orinda Movie Theatre, pub brew place with some weekend music, Lordes Ice Cream (won't tell you our ‘fav’ ice cream because they may run out when we visit)....great spot for an intimate date.
We visit Sushi Island at least once a month, and we did cheat and tried the sushi restaurant near the pub brew place, but we return back to island sushi because of the more...
Read moreNever going back. Not only is it incredibly overpriced, even for Japanese food, they have terrible service. Our server forgot to bring multiple dishes, including my partner’s entire meal. He claimed he forgot to put the order in, even though he wrote everything on the same ticket. We all order sashimi and rolls, but for some reason they “forgot” one person’s order. We canceled it, they just said sorry and that was it. We were there for over an hour, they seemed like they were too busy with to go orders to care about patrons inside. Would’ve been nice if they could’ve comp something for the inconvenience, especially since our bill was ridiculously expensive. All that said, the food was not good, I’ve had better at Safeway’s premade sushi. Their rolls were very small and the sauces drizzled on top were tasteless, the udon broth literally looked and tasted like water. So disappointed in this place. Avoid this place, there’s so many better Japanese food/sushi places in the east bay/CCC, this place...

Hamachi Kama was delicious but very small and overpriced portion.
Veggie tempura was poorly packaged; one of the pieces melted into the lid of the sauce, which soaked that piece and some others. Even unsoaked pieces were much thicker than we like for a tempura and full of carrots; usually there is more variety of veggies.
Lastly, the chirashi was again small portion. The fish was mostly good but came with no nice sides like I get at other places and the fish was cut VERY thick and haphazard looking, like an unskilled sushi chef.
The whole order was missing condiments, also no miso soup, no salad, etc. The places we usually go give this for free and have better overall quality and care. Won't be...
