Despite the food, drinks, and atmosphere being good, I’ve been unhappy with the lackluster service and consistently low level of friendliness from the staff for a while now. After visiting repeatedly, this issue far outweighs the positive aspects of the coffee shop. The staff always seem unhappy, and there's an ongoing sense of awkwardness—being looked at smugly and not even being greeted. On some occasions, I’ve seen them deliberately ignore customers, pretending not to notice people waiting at the counter with questions. Their demeanor is off-putting.
This afternoon, I went in, and it was clear that when they're busy, they do not know how to handle it adequately. We ordered two drinks, and while we received our orange blossom cold brew quickly, our strawberry rhubarb matcha latte was not served within a reasonable timeframe. Because of this, I went up to the counter. A barista—the shorter girl with brown hair—was walking behind me to get back behind the bar when she asked if I needed anything. When I kindly said I was waiting on my drink and mentioned what it was, she dismissively said, "We're still working on it," not realizing I had already been waiting about 10 to 15 minutes.
Then, after I stated my full order for reference, she told me that it had already been made. At that point, I had already seen it sitting behind the counter. She explained that since she didn’t know who it was for, she just left it there. So, by that logic, if they don’t know who a drink belongs to, their solution is to leave it behind the counter indefinitely until the customer inquires about it after an unreasonably long wait—rather than taking the initiative to figure it out. That is far from a professional approach. At the very least, she could have called out the drink and/or communicated with another staff member to ensure it was served to the right person. (Also, don’t even bother asking for “for here” cups, because if it’s busy enough, they don’t even have enough to accommodate the request. This has been a problem twice now.)
Secondly, when I paid for our order in cash, my change was supposed to be just one penny, but I didn’t receive it from the girl with dark hair and glasses who processed the payment. At the time, I chose not to say anything because of the overall unfriendly atmosphere—after all, it’s just a penny. But in retrospect, it really bothered me. I don’t care if my change is a penny or five dollars—it’s my right to receive it. The customer should decide whether to keep their change, no matter how small the amount. If $0.01 is worth it to them to keep, it’s worth it for me to get back too. More than the amount, it’s about the principle of doing what’s right.
But upon further reflection, until the owner, Tanner, decides to hire staff who genuinely care about making a lasting impression on both out-of-town visitors and locals—and until he himself becomes at least halfway friendly—one red cent is a fitting reflection of the tip I would leave, if I were to leave one. So, they can keep the penny as a representation of their one-cent service. Put a smile on, say hello, be welcoming, and stop treating your customers like disposable commodities just because you think you're the best due to the overglorified toasts, drinks, and atmosphere you offer. Running a good business isn’t just about what you offer; it’s about how you offer it and the attitude you consistently put forth. Because of these experiences, I won’t feel comfortable...
Read moreEven if this cafe was not in my neighborhood bubble, I would go out of my way to travel here to get a great snack, coffee, tea, or other home provisions.
First and foremost, the service is always extremely polite and courteous. There are so many options to splurge on coffee in this town. What makes this place stand apart is the friendliness of the owner and staff.
Secondly, the food options are absolutely wonderful and accommodating to most peoples’ dietary needs. Vegans can rejoice at the selections available, whether the house avocado toast, to a vegan Cuban. They make their own coconut bacun and it’s always on point.
The coffee selections are well curated. The tea and seasonal options are thoughtful and delicious. One of the best matcha lattes can be had here. Everything is measured so each cup is consistent.
Sharing a space with Whippoorwill Beerhouse and Package Store, the design of the room has a wonderfully naturally lit flow. Ample windows facing the south and a double door facing the east in the rear entrance with large shared picnic tables on a paver laid patio for outdoor seating, allow a great sunny day filled vibe.
A personal favorite quirk of the room is the consistency in Friday of classic western country diddys in the sound waves riding along the frequencies of other jazz inspired jams and modern singer songwriters amongst the pleasant mix through the week.
You can come through with a group to find your work flow, sit solo with some air pods and your laptop with high speed, cram on one of the couches and chat, or grab a spot in an Adirondack chair outside and find...
Read moreAs we were getting ready for a long drive we googled a coffee shop to get a quick cup of coffee and a sandwich before hitting the road. This place came up and I love exploring new smaller venues, so we stopped by. NOTHING about this stop was 'quick' it was the two of us and we ordered a late and a sandwich each. There was ONE person at the counter before us and ONE came in as we were waiting to get our food. There was just a few people sitting here and there in the shop, so it was not busy. It took us OVER 30 min to get our food. No, I'm not exaggerating, after waiting about 7 min and seeing how the two young ladies are moving I timed it. It felt at times that the ladies at the counter pretended that we were not there at all. One turned her back towards us and started eating a sandwich... WHILE making ours... it was just.... strange. The space was OK - not bad, nothing special but I wanted to mention that the food was... just average at best. There's no meet options on the menus (which maybe a preference for some, but I'd rather know that before coming in) and sandwiches that we ate did not leave a positive 'yum' feeling at all. If you are an "artsy"student and you need a place to study this place may actually work for you, but if you're busy "in-and- out" type,...
