In my continuing search for the best Japanese bento box on the west side of Orlando/Horizon West area, I happened upon Okayama Sushi & Hibachi. Stopped by in the late afternoon, kind of between lunchtime and early dinner hours. It was pretty much empty, but it was an odd hour. Service was friendly and excellent throughout, from start to finish.
I was pleasantly surprised that, although I'd missed the afternoon lunch specials" bit a bit, it didn't really matter, because their bento box offerings are the same all day. I was surprised, because the bento box prices were extremely reasonable (averaging $15 or so), which included soup, salad, a couple appetizers (I had the crab rangoon and gyoza), egg fried rice (at no extra charge, and not just the standard steamed white rice at many other places) and the main dish - I had hibachi chicken.
Everything, and I mean everything, even at an odd meal hour, was extremely hot and fresh, nothing tasted as if it had been rewarmed - it was very good temperature and food quality. The chicken was well-trimmed, and had no fat whatsoever (so many other places use cheap cuts of meat that often have undesirable fat or gristle - none of that here).
Let me be fully transparent and say that I have super high standards - I don't eat out all the time, so when I do, I appreciate great quality food and service. This place did not disappoint. Honestly, at first, I was a bit put off by the fact that, when you choose your bento box, the included appetizers are dependent upon the main dish selected. For example, I enjoy CA roll, and they did offer that as a side appetizer, but just not on the hibachi chicken bento box option. In order to get CA roll, you would have to order a different bento box, but no meat protein was included.
Simply because of the minor lack of selection/flexibility, this places earns a very solid 4 stars for me. I honestly reserve 5 stars only for places that blow me away in every area. I don't want to take away from the quality of the food here for even a minute - honestly, it was the best bento box I've had in the Orlando area thus far.
And also, even though I couldn't get the CA roll with my chicken choice, the prices were SO reasonable - and for so much quality food - that I just went ahead and ordered a 6-piece CA roll for $5 more... totally worth it.
I will definitely be back if I'm in the area. Not quite enough to make me drive cross town (I live about 40 mins away), but I will not hesitate to stop in any time I am even close by.
Very good...
Read moreMy husband ordered extra white sauce with his hibachi dinner. The server asked me if I'd like one too, and I said "yes". She goes to the back to grab it when all of a sudden the older Asian lady yelled so loudly, "NO MORE WHITE SAUCE!!!!" (Mind you, we were the only ones in the restaurant, so it was super quiet. We heard her loud and clear). Our server comes back out and walks right by us, no sauce on hand. She never brought it out. At the end of our meal my husband asked her, "Did she really yell at you to not bring us white sauce?" To which she politely smiled and replied, "Yes, but it's OK." I'm sorry, NO. ITS NOT OK. She's just doing her job. She didn't deserve to be embarrassed like that by, who we can only assume was her boss (the only other Asian lady that was working that night). Also, we're paying for it, so why are we being denied SAUCE? It's not like we were ordering a crazy amount. You get 1 little dish with your meal (like at Kobe's) and we were asking for another one. It's not an uncommon request. That alone ruined our meal, and for that we will not be returning bc I refuse to support people that mistreat their employees.
Side note: the spicy ramen is HEAVY on the sesame oil. To the point it was the only thing you...
Read moreStopped in for the first time on Inauguration Day for a late lunch, about 3 PM. This restaurant is very clean which is always a great first impression. They serve the lunch menu until 3:30. My husband and I both chose hibachi lunch. I went with steak, my husband chose salmon, both lunches were served with clear soup, veggies and rice. Really excellent meals full of flavor, clear soup tasted great on a rare cold day in Orlando. Prices are very reasonable 9.95 to 14.95 for hot hibachi, depending on protein you select. Highly encourage you to try, service was amazing it appears to be family run and they were very busy for late lunch so the word is spreading about this local gem. Welcome to...
