Terrible experience today during early lunch time. I really enjoy their 135th location, but decided to come to the Mission Farms location today because the other is closed. I took my sister for some pizza to congratulate her on graduation and college acceptance, as she has been away on mission. The minute we walk in, the hostess is rude. She quickly takes our temperature, registers my name (not my phone number) for "social tracking" for Covid, and seats us outside at request. She seats us in the only table with no umbrella, points to the QR Code on the table and says "that's your menu" and walks off. Our waiter comes a couple of minutes later and asks if we got a drink menu- I said no but would like one. He returns with water and no drink menu. I ask about getting an umbrella and he says they don't do any good anyways but brings one from a neighboring table. I explain that lowering these umbrellas would be beneficial to shading the area and they wouldn't always have to be pinned into the square tubing (unless its storming). Genuinely trying to help them- maybe they would be able to seat more people outside??!
So our waiter puts ours in the top of the post (lets say, 4" or so is all it would go), and walks off. Management comes out and says that he would like to remove the umbrella because the wind could kick up at any moment and "stab" us. Okay, I get safety hazards, but there wasn't any wind- none at all. And I tried explaining that if it were lower it would actually serve a purpose and that I would appreciate it if he left it, that we wouldn't mind running the risk of being "stabbed" and was trying to tell him that if the wind did kick up at all we would be willing to promptly remove it. Before I could get that out, he suddenly became extremely sarcastic and rude and says "oh no, that's okay, you're right... I forgot this was your place.." he turns around and walks back inside before I could even respond.
If management or an owner happens to read this... here's a quick physics lesson: If you lower the umbrellas into the square tubing further down and pin them in there, they will ACTUALLY shade more of the surface area. The higher up you put them, the less they actually shade and the more wind they will catch.
After a rather hostile encounter with, what I assume to be management, I decided to get up and walk away.
From the moment we walked in, it felt like you were a bother to all of them. Perhaps these employees got used to their unemployment benefits during COVID.. with the extra $600.00 per week that the state is granting, I am sure it was often more than they make actually working. I can see how this might give people a bad attitude at work.
2 stars because I typically enjoy myself at any of their locations- delicious pizza, excellent cocktail menu, and great beer variety for my husband to enjoy. Will be visiting 135th...
Read moreOur first and last time here. We were not impressed from the moment we walked in the door. The hostess by far was not friendly and welcoming and barely spoke two words to us.
We were not informed of any other beer options other than on tap, let alone any other drink options than on the extra drink paper menu. Our server, Melissa took about 10 minutes before she even greeted us, we came in about 4:00 pm on a Saturday so not too busy. We quickly noticed socializing appeared to be her priority. Once we received our food we had to flag her down to get assistance as she never checked on us. She didn't even take the time to remember what my husband was drinking.
The food, well, as you'll see from the picture, not much was eaten from my pizza. I LOVE pizza, it is practically its own food group to me, so I am particular when it comes to how my pizza is made. This in no way even came close to hitting the mark. Here is where it missed the mark: Cauliflower crust - really over cooked, and every cauliflower crust I've ever had has much more flavor as well, like Spin Pizza. Garlic cream sauce - should actually taste like there is garlic in it. Chicken - no seasoning let alone salt Pineapple- crushed Pineapple on pizza and not a high quality brand at that which makes for super watery Pineapple
Melissa did apologize for my pizza being disgusting, and said "I'll take that off your bill!" When she came back with our bill, she had taken $10.50, off the bill. My pizza had the following cost 8" pizza - $10 Cauliflower crust - $4 Each additional topping $1 Chicken Prosciutto 2x Pineapple Roasted yellow onion Provolone So that is $21! If you say you're going to take it off the bill and you don't have that ability, then talk to your manager. (See Bill picture below)
Hence why she got a $3 tip, poor service and lack of follow through on her promise that she offered and we didn't even ask for at all.
This was just our personal experience and if you've had a better one and love this place than great, that's wonderful, but it...
Read moreMartin City is nice brewery with good beer and solid pizza. I do believe there are breweries in Kansas City that offer a wider and more interesting selection, however Martin City is certainly consistent and adequate.
The problem is the rest of their menu is often uninspiring and during our last visit, downright bad. For example, both the seared tuna salad and salmon salad were delivered with the fish quite cold – as in directly out of the fridge. There was no warmth to the “sear” and the salmon tasted like cold canned salmon. When we asked our server if the fish could be warmed up, we were told that there was no microwave on site, and that they only had a pizza oven. She added that “if the cooks use the ovens, it will dry out the fish” (the fish was already dry, but that’s another issue). No other solutions or options were offered. My brisket sandwich was fine. Not great, not terrible – but fine.
Our server was nice, and everything we requested was eventually brought to us, though it took some effort to gain her attention at times. In her defense, she had full tables initially – though they cleared out not long after our arrival.
The problem is that with formidable competitive breweries with outstanding food, Martin City Brewery is relying on their (again, fine) beer and pizza to carry them along. This is perfectly acceptable strategy, especially given that they do not have much brewery competition near their Leawood location. Yet if I want something other than pizza, Martin City is not much of an option. And if I want creative and interesting beer, the same holds true.
Bottom line, go to Martin City Brewery if you want consistent, predictable, beer and acceptable/good pizza. If you want anything beyond that, I recommend...
