If you read any other review of Spice N Rice that suggests RUDE racist tendency on the part of the owner, spoiled food and a place for potentially getting food poisioning, consider this review "ditto" to all those reviews and then some.
I took my family to this place at the recommendation of a colleague who only recently moved to Kansas. He raved of having discovered a gem with assorted buffet compared to the few places he has come to know in his short period here in the area. I shall not be going back.
After a long day at work and a busy day for the family, I suggested we go here afterall it was our wedding anniversary. We have been fasting all day and it was close to breaking fast time. So to the evening buffet we went.
Upon entering the place, there were no direction as to which sitting area is available (right or left), we chose the sitting ares to the left. It had more sitting available. We were greeted (please allow me to mention, not verbally) by someone who appeared to be the owner or at least the boss, with such an un-welcoming reception. I shrugged it off maybe because i was too exited to try this new place - I was full of smile greeting this fellow as though I am the one welcoming him as a guest to my establishment as he looked past us hauntingly expressionless. The kind of expression which suggests "what are you doing here?".
As we settled into our seats, my wife apparently had also picked up on the vibe coming from the owner. She needed to ask me if i noticed by merely looking at me. Lo and behold! As we waited to be acknowledged at all let alone being served, the same owner who just gave us attitude upon entry is in full ushering mode with the family who came right after us. He is welcoming them arms and legs showing them to choice of their sitting; rushing to get them fruit cocktails.
At this point my wife could not just express her disgust by just looking at me she had to verbalize it. "Can you imaging that man's disgusting racist attitude and lack of respect for customer?" If you have managed to endure reading this review to this point; i am not talking about an assumption or a feeling. The Owner looked straight at us the whole time from when we walked in and as we were sitting. It was not a maybe he got distracted by the new set of customer. No, he was deliberate. His treatment of us would even be frowned upon in many areas of the sub-continent or any where in the world for that matter. This is the kind of treament that would cause a frachisee to lose their license if this were a franchise.
At this point, my wife and I would have walked right out of the establishment protesting with our feet and money. We looked at each other - we have three toddlers in tow whom we have just seated.
For what seemed like eternity, no one has yet come to our table. At least by relative measure, the family who came in after us have received their drinks. They have been shown the buffet and are now at the buffet serving themselves.
The american server who came to our table tried to rescue the situation short of saying "yes" i can see what just happened but it was too late the damge had been done.
Usually after a day-long fasting, food usually tasted especially delicious. That was not the case. Rather, the scanty food left on the buffet tasted "just that." - several days old.
Within fifteen minutes of the server coming to our table, we were done. Even the kids were digusted by the tastless food. I still added one of the recommended tips on the payment signature screen with hope that that tip goes to the waiter.
We definitely, absolutely unequivocally shall not be returning to Spice N Rice. Especially after getting and suffering from their food poisoning...
Read moreMe and my friends are in Kansas city, and last Saturday night we decided at the last minute to go out and sample the Indian restaurant near by which has some ala carte menu and not the typical buffet menu. We were greeted with a smile and saw that the restaurant was very busy. Actually we got the last table! After we ate some poppadoms with dips, we ordered our starters and main courses. The potato cutlets were cooked and spiced beautifully. The veg samosas were also good but could have been a little bigger. The mains arrived with a garlic naan and rice. Both were freshly cooked with nice succulent chicken. (Karahi and butter) and were perfectly spiced and extremely tasty. I also noticed that the sauces were not too oily which I think is a problem with some inferior restaurants. The garlic naan was particularly good. Puffy, crispy, soft and slighly browned on the sides and base.
Aloo Gobi is one of my favorites - cauliflower never tasted so good . Mixed veg curry and mixed veg Korma both have an awesome assortment of veggies and a great flavor due to their wonderful sauces .
The fish was awesome and garnished beyond a five star restaurant,it's really a meat place! And once you find things you like, you can pile your plate high.
Coming to the desserts I've had the best of orange kulfi ever. It just slipped in our mouths. Rasmailai is par the level.
The service was very friendly and efficient, easily coping with our large party of 12. Food arrived piping hot and in good time. The menu contains a good number of house specialities which are a cut above the normal menu offerings.
Finally we have got a place to hangout, celebrate all our happinesses. It feels like home and fills with joy all the time.
Altogether, the best food I have tasted out of that premesis in Kansas city. Keep it up!

Read moreI am a repeat customer at spice n rice in Overland Park and their food is usually very good. Unfortunately when we ordered food last night 3/1/24, we found a hair in one of our 3 purchases (fish and chips, garlic naan, and shrimp tikka masala) which was our shrimp tika masala and by the time we got home to eat they had already closed so we called after opening the next day. I simply asked for a refund for only my shrimp tika masla and I had to call, get a call back, only be offered another meal which I did not want seeing how I just found hair in my food.
After repeatedly trying to get me to order something else and I said I did not want anything else just a refund for the tikka masala, they said they’d ask and call back and never did so I decided to stop by with the remaining food with the hair in it and even photos with time stamps of when I found the hair and everything and ask for my refund. I am writing this review right after my interaction at the establishment today (3/2/24 at 2:00pm, it is now 2:26)
I was again asked if I wanted something else from the menu and I said no, then I had to have the same conversation with two more people and explain I’d just like a refund for the one item. A man who I assume is either the or one of the managers came up and said and I quote “How do we know that you didn’t put that there”.. yes, he repeatedly accused me of putting hair in my own food… for a refund. He then proceeds to say he’s done business here for 9 years and never had that issue and I said and I’m a repeat customer and never had that issue either but last night I did and I am just asking for a refund for the item I found the hair in. After insulting me I was able to get my refund, after jumping through countless hoops and hurdles with management/workers.
It was very disrespectful and HIGHLY unprofessional and I am quite frankly very disappointed as I typically recommend Spice n Rice to friends who’d like to try authentic Indian cuisine. I will no longer be a customer and will no...
