Oh, Winstead's in Overland Park, KS. A true relic, a monument to simpler times when a burger was just a burger, and a Coke was just... well, still a Coke, but in a frosty glass. I rolled in, expecting a journey to the greasy heart of Americana, and Winstead's delivered. The single cheeseburger? They call it "plain," and it's so plain it almost whispers existential dread. But here's the kicker: it's perfectly, agonizingly delicious. It’s like the ghost of every good burger you've ever had, perfectly seasoned, just enough cheese to make you question your life choices but not enough to regret them. A simple, yet profound, experience. A little raw white onion, a few pickles, and that perfect smash make it oh so yummy 🤤. And the fries? Golden, crispy, and probably responsible for at least 70% of my current happiness. They're not fancy, they're not truffle-infused, they're just... fries. The kind that make you remember why you started eating fried potatoes in the first place. Washed it all down with a fountain Coke that tasted like pure, unadulterated nostalgia, with just a hint of carbonation. Honestly, if you're looking for a gourmet experience, go somewhere else. But if you want a burger that reminds you of a simpler time, when the biggest decision was single or double, and the only side effect was pure, unadulterated joy (and maybe a little heartburn), Winstead's is your darkly humorous, delicious...
Read moreWe hadn't been to a Winstead's in years until we decided to stop in for dinner for the family the other evening. The kids compared the food to Freddy's and there were mixed reviews. I personally like the burgers at Winstead's better as did one of the boys. I also think the fries are better than Freddy's. But I like a chunkier fry and I don't like the salt that Freddy's puts on their burgers. Our service was a bit slow, they were understaffed with only one waitress working. There were at least three people in the back that didn't seem that busy, standing around, along with a girl working the soda fountain. Our order was 100% correct. The shakes are still top notch. The dessert we chose was the brownie sunday and I was way better than we expected. The decor is faded and I'm need of a makeover, as another reviewer indicated. It's a great location and they would get a lot more business if they did update. We chose Winstead's over Freddy's and we're glad we did. The simple menu still works, the desserts including the shakes, still great. If you're looking for an old fashioned burger splurge, Winstead's...
Read moreNew to the area so this is the only Winstead's I've eaten at. The restaurant itself is dated and a little on the dingy side. It's so 80's it's almost awesome. I was hopeful! Some of the best food is made in places with a little 'patina' to them. Unfortunately that's not the case here. I ordered the double steak burger with cheese, a coke and a side of onion rings. The burger came with romaine lettuce. Not the standard iceberg. The meat was plain and dry. I couldn't taste any seasoning. C'mon people, salt and pepper are standard. ...and to top it off, the onion slice was too thick. Ugh. I was really disappointed. How do you fail at the one thing you've built your business on? Then, to add insult to injury from the bland burger, the onion rings were overly salty! I did have a slice of pumpkin pie that was delicious. Lol, I felt like I deserved it after choking down their steak burger!
The prices were fair for the portion sizes...but I probably wouldn't go back. Especially since this Winstead's is across the street from a...
