Fun, casual Peruvian spot serving reasonably priced, tasty food
I came to Puerto 27 on a Monday evening with a girlfriend. We had a 7:30pm reservation and when we walked in there was a Seat Yourself sign, so we did. Our timing was impeccable - the sun was just starting to set and Puerto 27 is full of windows and a wraparound porch, perfect for such an occasion. We seated ourselves in a corner and watched the sunset before picking up our menus and grabbing some food/drink.
Ambiance - 3 stars. Super casual, full of natural light and big views of the ocean. That said, there didn't seem to be a ton of effort put into the appearance of the place. That's ok, I prefer the effort in the food :P
Pisco sour - 4 stars. Pretty solid Pisco sour with a fun 27 in the foam on top.
Sangria - 2 stars. Red sangria served wayyyyyy too sweet (but thanks for all the fruit).
Ceviche sampler - 5 stars. A sampler of their six different ceviches and tiraditos. As a sampler, it was awesome. Hearty portions of all six. In itself, could be a full meal, or a great way to share with friends. Everything tasted fresh. $32. Broken down by type:
Ceviche clasico - 3 stars. Local halibut, onion, rocoto, yams, cancha, choclo. Perfectly fine, standard ceviche, nothing to get excited about.
Ceviche chifa - 4 stars. Ahi tuna, onion, scallions, sesame, pickled daikon, avocado, peanuts, plantain chip. I'm a sucker for tuna and I liked this one but I found the soy flavors to be overpowering.
Ceviche alianza lima - 5 stars. Wild cod, scallops, calamari, shrimp, onion, cilantro, coconut leche de tigre, yams, cancha, corn. Spicy and light, reminiscent of green curry type flavors, and I loved the mix of seafood.
Ceviche barranco - 3 stars. Local halibut, aji amarillo, mango, onion, quinoa, basil. Also perfectly fine, standard ceviche, nothing to get excited about. No quinoa though.
Tiradito nikkei - 5 stars. Thin sliced ahi tuna, ponzu, chalaca salsa, quinoa, truffle oil. Similar flavors to the ceviche chifa but less overpowering on soy, a bit more complex, a bit nuttier. No quinoa here either.
Tiradito pucusana - 4 stars. Thin sliced salmon, passion fruit, scallion, purple corn, scallion, cilantro, rocoto oil. The salmon was fatty and tender and I would have been ALL over this one but it had some darker, charred flavors that overpowered the salmon a bit.
Jalea mixta - 3 stars. More mixed seafood, because hi, have we met? In this fried version we had calamari, shrimp, scallop, fish, yuca, cancha, and huacatay tartare sauce. The dish was fine but nothing to write home about, really just your standard fried items. A bit of crunch but not overwhelmingly battered or fried. I did really like the tartare sauce, which is unusual for me. Not sure what made this one different, maybe it was slightly tangier? Good portion for sharing, $15.
Anticucho corazon - 4 stars. Traditional beef heart skewer served with grilled corn on the cob, fried yuca and aji criollo. The aji marinade on the beef heart was killer. They were done nicely, not overcooked, pretty tender. The corn on the cob was just ok, a little bland and slightly overdone. The yuca was lightly fried, soft inside. $12 for two skewers.
Overall, I'd definitely come back here. Reasonably priced, decent portions, friendly staff, and so many...
Read moreI have been to Puerto 27 with my wife for lunch . This is i think the 10th visit to this place that used to be very friendly with perfect customer service. We met this manager at the entrance and she got us a table then left. We have been waiting for 20 minutes then by chance the waiter told us that we have to order online.*the manager didn't even mention that *. Then we got our food which was different in taste and portions compared to couple months before the pandemic. I dont like to mention it but we left good tip in our bill and even cash for the waiter who was very friendly. When we decided to leave we went back to the entrance but this manager stepped in front of us on a very rude manner and told my wife to wear her mask and use a different way to exit. We just followed her and left , the distance i am mentioning here is less than 5 yards, my wife mask was ripped so the manager yelled at my wife in front of everyone telling her she is selfish and she only care about herself and not about the others. Her attitude was very aggressive and rude. Believe me if she said it on a professional way we would accept it but my wife got really upset and asked for the manager and yet we just found she was the manager. We reached out to the owner of this place and he got very upset regarding this unprofessional manager attitude. He apologized to my wife and thanked her for support as we live in the same area and we wanted to support our local businesses. Just to mention the mask details, Employees and customers were not wearing masks at this place and the unprofessional manager i mentioned above was wearing a bandana and her dress code was totally far from being a fancy restaurant manager dress code, not presentable... Today we received a call from the police station telling us to not go there anymore. We are taking this to court and this is not going to end here. We will take all the necessary legal procedures just because a decent family doesn't deserve to be humilated and be extremely disrespected. We have been home for 4 months following the guidelines and respecting the safety measurements in order to keep our family safe, and the community as well. So too bad for Puerto 27 which used to be a great...
Read moreSeriously, eat before you get here. Okay, let's get real. I couldn't wait to try this place after reading the reviews. Unfortunately, I was so very disappointed. First, we arrived about ten minutes before our five o'clock reservation and we were told to wait because the restaurant wasn't really open until five. Okay, fair enough. The manager, or owners sat at a table chatting while we waited. At five o'clock, nothing changed. My partner, who was in a neck brace, wasn't even offered a seat. At 5:10, we were finally seated and I looked forward to a five star meal. Our friend and i ordered the scallops, which were tasty, but not five star. Considering the price of $16.00, I expected more than two scallops. When my partner asked for bread, she was charged $2.00 for one slice of Safeway or Costco dried out, not fresh something. Really? Her chicken dish was good, but again, the price wasn't worth it. Additionally, I ordered a drink from the bar - sex on the beach - which tasted like a screwdriver. This is a standard drink that any decent bartender should be able to make. Basically, our bill came to $75.00, excluding tip and we left disappointed and quite hungry. If this place is going to survive, they need to be realistic. Offer something on the table, like olives or plantains ( not the tasteless, chips we were charged five bucks for). They nickel and dime you for everything and you wind up paying for the view. Locals won't buy it. So, to sum up: food is good but highly overpriced and nothing I can't make at home. Don't go here if you're hungry and expect a five star meal. This place will not last unless they wake up...
