Scenario: It's a Monday morning, and I want a sausage biscuit. McDonald's is closed for some reason. I don't want to cross Mineral Wells...ya know, I have never been to the Hardee's in Paris since I moved back to town, so let's give it a try.
I pull in and see they are doing a brisk business (probably since Micky D's is shuttered) and get in the drive through line. Out of the corner of my eye, I see an advertisement on the window: 2 for $5. However, there is a car parked right in my eyeliner and I cannot see the choices in small print under the huge 2 FOR $5 lettering. And the line is now moving me out of eyesight of the sign so I do not get a chance to squint and try and make out the details. No big deal, they will have the choices at the order window or somewhere else.
I am at the order stand...and nowhere is there an advertisement for the 2 for $5. It is not on the menu, it is not on a sticker, it is not on yard sign. There are many people behind me now, so I panic and I order a sausage biscuit and a country fried steak biscuit. $7 and some change, please drive around.
I get to the window, and give money. When she brings me the change I ask what the choices are for the 2 for $5. Here is our conversation:
Window Lady: "Sausage, egg and cheese biscuit and biscuit and gravy. Oh, and steak biscuit."
Me: "Wait, steak biscuit, like the thing I just ordered?"
Her: "Yeah."
Me: "Why isn't that on the menu?"
Her: "It's only on the window over there" (points in the general direction of the sign that I saw coming in).
Me: "So nowhere else? It wasn't on the menu or anywhere else?"
Her: stares at me like she knows where I am going with this and doesn't like it.
Me: "So, basically, I just paid two dollars more for what I ordered?"
Her: looks at screen "No, you ordered a sausage biscuit, not a sausage, egg biscuit."
Me: So I got less and paid more, is that what you are saying? I paid two dollars for you not to put egg on the sandwich?"
Her:
Me: Can you throw some egg on there and give me my two dollars back?"
Her: No, hone."
Me: "Thank you."
So, I truncated this exchange to make room, but it is pretty accurate. There were several things I could have done differently: I could have not pulled in so quickly and had time to read the sign on the window while traffic backed up on Mineral Wells. I could have pulled in and gone inside. I could have asked what the choices were for the special at the order box.
However, they could have seen my order and, knowing what their menu is, could have simply said "you know, if you put egg on that sausage biscuit you can those for the $5 special?" And I would have said, "Sweet. Do it."
I don't give negative reviews unless something really gets me at a place. I have worked in the food industry and so I don't go on these places and complain about stuff that happens all the time: in fact, feeling like a male Karen is what made me just end our exchange and take my food before the line behind me got any bigger. But as I drove home, this interaction just kept digging at me. Maybe it was because it was such a simple fix on their part after I had brought the matter to their attention. Maybe it was "No, hone" with that Southern saccharine inflection. Maybe it was the fact that I had not been to Hardee's in 10 years because of several instances of bad service at different locations (not the Paris location, at that time) and my first time trying it again I ran into this.
All I can say is, I now know why I never see their parking lot full (unless...
Read moreWell folks... I've done it again. I ordered their very big triple cheeseburger. I have to say it wasn't a bad sandwich. I was made to order but I'm sure it was cooked ahead of time and kept in a warmer. I asked for extra onions (big surprise) and I got them. I liked the thousand island style sauce. The sandwich was rather plain. No veggies except the requested onions. I suppose you can ask for them but I don't know if they charge for that. All in all I haven't been to Hardees in several years and I have to say the food reminded me of why. The food is simply, just plain. It tasted fine but nothing really set my bell ringing. I hate to do a review like this but I feel like I owe honesty to my 12,000 + readers. So to sum up my trip to Hardee's while the food was prepared as I ordered but honestly it left me looking for something more... Flavor!! Its not a bad place for...
