First off, wow, I've been up most of the night sick as a dog. Now, let's review. I have been a loyal fan of Rubi's for years and even nicknamed an eating contest based on their food. Four large pieces of pizza, a stromboli and a 2 liter of pop. It's the Big Drew challenge, only myself and one other have completed this feat.
I haven't been to Rubi's since before their last Covid outbreak and will probably refrain from returning.
The Calzone was the first item I tried. The bread on the Calzone was so hard I personally couldn't eat it. I did love the cheese inside, you can never go wrong with ricotta cheese, but the mozzarella was so bad. I give this a D-.
The Italian sub was next. It was loaded with veggies, not too much meat and a lot of mayo/miracle whip. The Italian dressing was on the side. I didn't need the dressing. It was a good sub minus the lettuce.
The Philly Cheese Steak sub was eaten by my gf and she said it was the best she's had. I am allergic to onions so I can't give a review based on this.
The last thing I tried was the pepperoni pizza. I typically eat one to two pieces and half a sub. I ate half of the sub and couldn't even finish the pizza. It was so gross. It tastes as though a half bag of salt was cooked into the sauce or cheese. It was inedible. Most of it was thrown away. The sauce was so bitter that I thought I was eating unripened tomatoes from my garden.
The pizza being the last straw, I had to stop eating and find something else. Thank goodness for my Cherry Coke drink...that was the only thing that helped. I really needed some Wolf Cola during this...
Read moreRubi's is up and down for me. Lately it has been more down than up. Tonight, we got there around 8pm. The wife almost always gets a slice of spaghetti pizza, and who could blame her? It is amazing. Well, usually. She got the last piece for the night. It must have sat for a bit.
Sidebar: For those of you who don't know, Rubi's preps a lot of their food and displays it at the counter for you to choose by sight. Then they heat it for you. That means it can potentially sit out in open air for a while before being chosen. And now back to the spaghetti pizza...
It must have sat for a bit after initially being baked a little too long. The top was already looking a little toasty. And after they threw it in the oven to heat it up, it came out over done and dry. Not the quality we were hoping for.
I decided on the stuffed pepper special with garlic styx. Never tried it before, and I was feeling impulsive. They were out of clean knives (my wife got the last one) so we had to share. There was no way a fork was going to cut through this pepper. I struggled to even cut it with my wife's knife. She tried to give them the benefit of a doubt and say the knife might have been dull. That wasn't it. The pepper was just that tough. I got it cut and was able to chew it, however. The sauce was good and the ricotta and mystery filling was tasty. But good grief, that pepper.
Anyway, all in all the meal was okay. We hope for, nay, expect more from Rubi's. We'll be back, and you should give them a shot, too. I'll give them the benefit of a doubt and chalk it up to just...
Read moreI had not been in the store since about 10-15 years ago. I told the lady at the checkout that I needed help ordering. She said what do you want, I said pizza and pasta (in my mind i meant spaghetti) she even asked me what kind of sauce I said meat plus I got a piece of mushroom and pepperoni pizza. I had my grandchildren with me, I ordered 3 strawberry and creams a kids spaghetti and a root beer. I was going to share my food with my grandson. Anyway, when then food started coming I was handed my pizza and the young lady who did not speak or understand English very well started to hand me this tri color pasta salad stuff I di not order or want. I tried to tell her I did not order that, I ordered spaghetti and meat sauce. When she took it back the lady at the front desk who took my order became livid and told me that I needed to explain myself better the next time (She was very rude) and was more interested in talking to the gentleman who had come upfront to talk to her. I asked if I could exchange the pasta salad for spaghetti. Long story short, finally the girl who did speak good English went back and got a manager and he was very polite. He asked me what I would like to have in place of the pasta salad which was spaghetti, it was just a couple minutes and he came with a bowl of spaghetti with meat sauce. I will say there was a wonderful magician there that night who kept my grandbabies entertained while I struggled to get my food corrected. I'm not sure who he was but God Bless him for...
