Want to Walt’s on Newport Ave in Pawtucket for lunch last week. They are mostly known for their roast beef sandwiches, but they have a few other things on the menu if you’re not into roast beef.
This place has been around for a long time, and they have a few locations still. It’s sort of a nostalgic place for me, because I used to go there (to the now closed Warwick location near the airport) once in a while with my dad when I was a kid. The place still looks the same inside, it’s like a time machine. If you’re under 30, and you want to see what it was like to eat at Walt’s in the 1980’s, just go there now, it’s the same thing. From the menu, to the little paper cups you can pump your own ketchup into, nothing has changed. Well, maybe the price has changed, because it’s kinda expensive considering that it’s basically fast food.
I ordered the fish and chips which is available on Wednesday and Friday. It seemed like such a good idea, I was craving it. The food came out, hot and fresh, and looked great. The fish was a nice golden brown, and the fries were hot and crispy. A couple packets of tartar sauce and I was good to go. After eating though, the regret set in, as always. Whenever I eat a bunch of fried food, especially fish and chips, I have buyer’s remorse. Not Walt’s fault though. The fish and chips were great! It’s not...

This was takeout Fish & Chips. We re-heated the food in the oven as soon as we arrived home to eliminate any sogginess and to make sure to eat a hot meal.
The meal portion size was good. Kudos for using a paper plate and not styrofoam. The cole slaw was very good. The french fries (chips) were just ok and nothing special. The fish was perfectly cooked, batter / coating was light and the taste was just average for me. Maybe my expectations were too high after reading all the good F&C reviews. In summary, I was disappointed.
Would I re-order this meal? No.
See my unanswered question posted a few days ago... This is my first time ordering from Walt's. I ordered through the Google Maps app. Fish & chips was almost $2 more ordering through GMaps app as compared to Chow Now app. I ordered two fish and chips and paid about $4 too much. Why?...
Read moreHave been eating here since I worked there in 1999. Never liked roast beef before I worked there but now this is the only place I'll eat it from. Their thanksgiving sandwich is delicious. They have just recently gone franchise though and I've noticed some changes: used to have two sizes of onion rings, now just one. And their rings are different than what they used for 14 years; they've always been frozen but now they use a different brand and they're huuuuuge onions and they're so thick that they're hard to bite into. They do finally accept credit cards which they never did so that's nice. Expect a bit of a wait during lunch and dinner hours on Wednesday and Friday, they supposedly have some of the best fish and chips in the state (I don't like fish so I can't attest to that but the packed restaurant speaks for itself!). All in all still one of my favorite...
