Penn Hills Joe's Italian Ice — Restaurant in Penn Hills

A fine little ice cream and frozen ice spot. Pretty reasonable prices and a decent amount of variety on the menu. I've had quite a few items from this place over the years, but just recently I tried their coffee and toffee milkshake.

You can have any flavor of their ice cream in milkshake form. The shake was pretty good, but there was no real toffee flavor. No pieces of toffee on top or throughout. It tasted almost like cold brew. Not that sweet either.

Their ice was somewhat mediocre. My friend tried their cherry ice and the color was very artificial. The flavor was also way too sweet and almost like cherry flavored medicine. Good portion for the price though.

What this place does best are the soft serves, banana splits, and sundaes. The soft serve ice creams, especially the twists (part vanilla part chocolate soft serve), are really good. They are rich and creamy. Nice and sweet. That's what I would recommend if you come here.

All in all, nice little shop with a fair amount of variety. The ice isn't the best, milkshakes are okay, but the soft serve, twists, and sundaes...

Such a fun little gem with sweet treats! Lots of delicious options and helpful, friendly, patient staff. Ordered the "Bada Bing" water ice with chocolate soft serve and chocolate vanilla twist soft serve for my kiddo-all very tasty. Another customer actually recommended the Bada Bing (dark cherry water ice with Bing cherry chunks) while I was trying to decide what to order and it was a great recommendation! There are a few picnic tables and benches to sit and enjoy your water ice or ice cream, which presents the opportunity to chat with other customers. Nice...

Never too busy so you don't have to wait long and other than Rita's it's the only place to get ice cream or Italian ice in Penn Hills. The brownie sundae was very disappointing and will not order again. I guess we just remember how good Bruster's brownie sundae used to be. The older woman who took our order seemed more focused on her phone then taking our order. The soft serve was good....
