Atilano’s Tacos — Restaurant in Penns Grove

I have been coming here 2 years now. This trip was very disappointing. First the horchata was off leaving a powdery taste in my mouth and no straws. Then we were brought out a basket with just 5 tortilla chips with bean dip on them it wasn't enough for a toddler let alone 3 people to share. Then the Mexican corn had way too much lemon and I'm not even use to Mexican corn tasting like lemon it was sprinkled with so much of it. All you could taste was lemon. Then the Carnitas came out and I could smell the onion before the plate was even in front of me. There was so much onion on it that it covered the meat and barely had cilantro. I scraped the onion off. Whoever made them please you don't need a whole chopped onion on one Carnita. Oh and the carnitas wrap was thick like pita bread so weird it's usually two thin pieces of a soft tortilla. Maybe there is a new chef/cook. But too many things went wrong and tasted off. This place is filthy. It's cold. The door has not been cleaned or sanitized. I did not want to go here but a friend wanted Mexican food. The steak is a cheap cut, it's so dried out that you don't see any char or any grease as if it was freshly cooked. The place was out of dip for the amazingly hard stale chips. Another couple was there and the woman was not eating her food either. I left my whole order, right there at the table, I told the girl that the steak was dry and could not be chewed because of all the grissal that cheap steak has. Atilano's doesn't look like much from the outside. But, don't let that throw you off. This is an authentic Mexican restaurant. Family owned and operated, this funky little gem is producing fresh, hot Mexican comfort food from scratch. Mom is master of the kitchen and her offerings are perfection in flavor, presentation, portion and value. Service is a reflection of the love and joy that comes with making people happy.
