I ordered for the very first time here tonight. It was my night off to cook, so I used a gift card I received for Christmas. The total amount was over $50. I got two orders of "ROPA VIEJA" and a side order of boiled yucca. The ropa vieja was tough and not shredded like ropa vieja usually is. I had to cook my mom a different meal because of this- so much for a night off of cooking. When I called the restaurant, they couldn't find a manager, I guess, but the lady told me to call tomorrow because she couldn't find the cook. She mentioned the cook was new, which doesn't surprise me. What a sad representation of ropa vieja which is usually so thinly shredded that it melts in your mouth. Not this meat- it was hard and there wasn't much sauce. It looks NOTHING like the pictures. Worse part is I ordered two dinners of this. I will NEVER order from here again, and I want a manager to come eat this food. If I wasn't twenty minutes away, I would bring them this meal and let them work through the tough hard meat and let me know if this is how they want their restaurant to be remembered. It's a CUBAN cafe- the seasoning wasn't even Cuban-style and it's supposed to cook Cuban food with expertise. I am very annoyed and hungry because I threw it out. One other thing - On Yelp, it even says they substituted the meat for ropa vieja one day when they ran out. I believe this is probably the case here. DO BETTER!!!!!!!

P.S the frozen veggies are terrible....like...

Stopped into Cuban Cafe with my partner today for a late lunch. After looking at the menu and also the prepared food for the specials, we chose to order from the prepared food. My partner ordered the pepper steak with black bean rice and maduros, and a bowl of chicken soup . I had the ropa vieja, black bean rice, and maduros. The pepper steak was flavorful with a well seasoned sauce. The soup was fresh with a good amount of chickwn and vegetables. I haven't had ropa vieja in years, so I was glad to have a plate of well cooked authentic ropa vieja. The meat was cooked until tender and shredded perfectly. It was seasoned well and the flavor of the green olives came through just enough. It was fantastic to have this dish made this well. The staff here were friendly, helpful and attentive, offering explanations of what the choices were, even though it was a bit busy. After eating my partner ordered a cappuccino, which was perfect and not overly strong. I ordered a cafecito, which was strong and a little sugar made the flavor very bright for an espresso, which was quite enjoyable to end my meal with. Friendly staff, fresh food, and fast service makes Cuban Cafe a perfect place to stop and have a casual meal at a fair price whether you live in Perth Amboy, are there shopping for the day or just passing through. I highly recommend Cuban Cafe. You won't be...

Avoid this place. I ordered 3 cuban sandwiches with no mayo or mustard. My son is allergic to mustard. I get there and watch the girl make them put mayo and mustard on all 3. I ask her those aren't mine are they? She said yes. I told her they were not supposed to have mayo or mustard she said ok. She then proceeded to wipe it with a napkin and tell me she took it off. I sit there and look at her in disbelief. I told her I just saw you wipe it off with a napkin. She then proceeded to tell me she didn't put it in. Knowing I was looking at her do it. The owner comes out I tell him the same. He tells me she took it off. When a sauce is put directly on a sandwich and just wiped off it is still on that sandwich. I looked at him and in disbelief told him are you kidding me I seen her put it on all 3 and then wipe it off. He looks at me and tells me that she took it off. At this point I just walked out. So if I never seen her do it and my son ate that after she wiped it off. We would have ended up in the hospital. Very unsafe establishment. I used to come here all the time and this never happened before. Never again will I go there and all the ppl I sent there I will tell them not to go either. I recommend you stay away from a place that not only the workers but the owner will serve food like...

This is a cafe / luncheonette type of place. So if you are looking for fine dining, this isn't it. The food was very good. We ordered from the prepared foods area. You can also order from the menu. You are given a choice of white rice, or two different types of congri. There is an assorments of chicken, pork, ropa vieja, etc. And you get a side. When we went the had yucca and maduros. My husband had ropa vieja, white rice and yucca. He's not Cuban but loves ropa vieja and he said this was very good. The yucca was soft and had good flavor. I had the chicken assado which was very flavorful, with congri and maduros. Portions are extra large. My husband ate most of his, but I took mine home for lunch tomorrow! (I also took home some ham croquettas) The counter is typical a Cuban counter. All types of shakes that you would expect, some sweets and cafe cubano. Seating was booth seating, but ok. The value was very good for the amount of food we received. If in the area again, we'd go back. I recommend you sit by the fish tank for a good view.

The menu is pretty odd- fajitas in a Cuban Restaurant? There is a buffet style area where you order prepared foods. Oxtail was actually pretty good- white rice tasted old. Yuca was okay just over cooked , looked like it was standing there all day lol. Black beans were decent. Ribs were actually good, arroz morro was lacking flavor. The tamal was horrible , the froZen goya ones are better. Check was $40 , there is a credit card surcharge. Definitely not worth it. Server was nice, place was clean. Probably not coming back. Who ever gave this 5 stars has never had authentic cuban food. Que pena.
