1st I had to take my time with this one, after reading all the reviews to make sure it wasnt me. I go to restaurants based on these 🌟's. N I must say I was very disappointed, I walked into this presentable establishment friendly staff who greeted me and my friend with a pleasant attitude(& that's the 2 🌟). I smelled something delicious n spicy and asked what was it she said the pulled pork I said I'll have it. The food came out as a huge portion so of course my greedy self was like "leftovers"! Yams and rice were my sides and it all looked great until I took a bite I had to try the pull pork twice before realizing that its not going get any better. The the rice wasn't so bad it was just over cookred the texture was off. The yams were awesome perfectly cooked not overly sweet. The pork was no where near spicy mostly sweet and it had an off taste probably cause it was lacking the basic salt n pepper. Listen I'm not knocking the 17 or so ppl that like this spot but If you are every in the NY/NJ area I can refer you to some places because this just cant be IT! My first trip to philly DISCLAIMER: This is in no way shape or form to discredit this restaurant, but these are solely the views and opinions of my taste...
Read moreWas on a small trip in town and heard this was some of the best BBQ in Philly. Thought I'd drive up from the airport and try it and it's 100% worth it.
The owners (husband and wife I believe) were some of the most hospitable people I've met in recent years. I got 1 lb of brisket and a rack of spare ribs which ended up being about 15 bones. For only $48 total. This isn't even possible at some of the BBQ joints in Texas where I live. The mixed sauce was amazing, not to sweet, just spices with a kick of heat. The sliced bread is a BBQ staple that many miss but they baggie it up for you for free and lots of it. The brisket was the perfect sliced blend of point and flat with a thick smoke ring, I couldn't stop myself from eating the whole damn order. The ribs were also cooked perfectly, not sloppy nor falling apart when picking them up; so tender, perfectly sauced, perfect BBQ flavor. My only regret is I did not try the beef ribs. Only took about 12 minutes for a full order and in that time I heard other customers raving about the beef ribs. This is now my go to spot when I travel to PHL for work. I'll be back for some beef ribs and to try all the sides, the blueberry cornbread sounds to good to...
Read moreThe smoked wings had a very good smokiness flavor to them. The sauce was a bit heavy on one side, but the side without the sauce was perfect. Next time I'll request the sauce on the side, so that I can enjoy the smoke flavor on the wings. The wings also had a tender cook on them. They were not tough and chewy.
The ribs were okay. The sauce was definitely heavy on them. I realized the ribs had a bit of a char, but that's fine & to be expected when cooking on a grill or smoker. However, I was ynable to really taste the flavor of the ribs due to the overwhelming amount of sauce covering the ribs. The ribs had a good pull on them. They weren't tough and I believe that I get the sauce on the side next time, they will probably be even better.
Overall the two meats were edible, again for me and my taste they would have been even better if the sauce was on the side and I could actually taste the flavor of the meats fully.
