Iztaccihuatl Restaurant — Restaurant in Philadelphia

I was NOT feeling this place.

First off, I would say the manager interrupted our conversation but that would be an understatement. He never left our conversation and was annoying. He was also dressed like he didn’t take the place seriously. That was further obvious from the bikes in the entrance and the chairs stacked in the corner in plain sight.

The food was alright. Taquitos de Puebla is better. I asked for a recommendation and he brought out a beef cemita. It was okay. The peppers on it were dried which was pretty weird. My girlfriend ordered a Hawaiian torta which was actually pretty good. The cemita was not in the menu. It wound up being about half the size of my girlfriend’s and twice the price.

When we went to pay with card he charged us more than it said on the bill because “he had to charge us tax that he wouldn’t need to if we paid cash.” That’s illegal, by the way. I was going to keep my mouth shut about this place but what really got me was after I left a 16% tip he yelled out the door at us “was it that bad?!” I think that is a fine tip and one he didn’t truly deserve.

Ordered from here once. Can't complain. I'm not sure if I got the right order but the protein was correct. I ordered the camarones al ajillo which is described as jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce. A platter of shrimp with rice and beans and peas came with that all in one plate. It was delicious, shrimp were big and fresh and everything was well flavored however, I intended on only ordering shrimp because it read that way (there was a platters section and other meals that said whether it contained rice etc or not, this one didn't say that) so I screwed up my diet and ate what came with it because everything had gotten all mixed up in transit anyway. I also ordered the seafood soup. It was okay. The calamari was a little overcooked but it's good. There were giant mussels (fresh, tasted fine) and small ones (tasted old and bitter) in the soup as well. I added some salt, smoked paprika, and onion powder to add some flavor tot he broth. Really creepy vibes. We walked in and there was just two men at the bar and the hostess was sitting with another man. They all glared at us as we walked in - it was 10 PM but their hours say they’re open till 1 AM. But we immediately got a hostile vibe so we asked are you guys still open? The hostess stared at us and then angrily said yes. So we started to sit down but then another woman came out of the kitchen and the hostess, who was getting our menus, sighed heavily to her. When she came over with the menus, we said are you actually open? Because we can leave if you’re trying to close. And she shrugged and just kind of looked annoyed so we just said yeah we’ll go.
