Tamalex is a little gem in Philadelphia, serving up authentic Mexican food that hits all the right notes. As a Mexican living in the U.S., it’s not always easy to find food that reminds me of home, but this place absolutely nailed it.
I had the quesadilla de huitlacoche with a handmade, fried tortilla—crispy, flavorful, and just like you’d find in Mexico. The gordita de chicharrón prensado was another standout. The chicharrón was fresh, homemade, and had that perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture. You can really taste the love and care that goes into every dish.
It’s a humble spot—nothing fancy—but that’s part of its charm. The focus is all on the food, and it really shows. The service was fantastic, too. The staff was super friendly, attentive, and made sure we felt right at home.
I also noticed they serve some Honduran food, and I have to say, I really want to try the pupusas next time. It’s awesome to see them offering flavors from across Central America, making the experience even more special. If you're craving authentic Mexican and Honduran food in Philly, Tamalex is...
Read moreA gem that always delivers in south philly! Super amazing tacos and tortas and from that I’d try much more of their menu in the future. They set the standard so I imagine the rest of the food is just as superb. Service here is always really good, servers are very energetic and kind and able to speak two languages, so utmost respect. Their agua frescos are huge and very tasty. I want to try their dessert but their portions are just so generous and perfect to keep me full for hours. 10/10 everytime, would bring everyone I know here.
Update: I went too long without the food here and ordered some for delivery and their torta (I got it with ham) was the most similar to the ones I had in Oaxaca, I was so excited and happy while eating this and i love that their food can bring so much joy by being that good. Shoutout to this place once again, I feel like every time I come it’s even better than the last and it was already amazing to begin with. I can’t speak more highly of...
Read moreTheir food is delicious, but their staff have a nasty attitude towards my family and I. We have visited this restaurant for the last 8 years - that’s how much we love their food. They serve us with an attitude every time we go; therefore, my husband said that it was the last time that we are visiting. I ordered a coffee and had to ask the lady for cream three times before she brought it over. My husband overheard her talking about me with her lady coworker. I do not have an attitude or have mistreated them in anyway. My money is worth the same as any other customer; therefore my money will be...
