Because of the name, I was expecting Mediterranean food. It is actually Portuguese (I guess Portugal has a Mediterranean coastline). I ordered water and was given an 11oz bottle of mineral water. I just wanted the free tap water, but I didn't complain. I was confused by the menu. If I ate this sort of thing all the time, I would probably know each dish already, as it is authentic Portuguese, from what I'm told. However, I had never eaten anything like it before, so the descriptions on the menu didn't tell me much of anything, and there were very few photos. I asked the waitress for a recommendation and she basically read the menu to me instead. I finally decided on grilled veal chops, yellow rice, and fried plantains. It came out quickly. The Veal chops did not have much flavor besides salt and were very fatty. The yellow rice was pleasant, but also bland. The fried plantains were cooked well, but had NO seasoning. Not even salt. I asked for a sauce and was offered A1 (I'm not THAT white) or their warm garlic sauce. I chose the garlic sauce, which was wonderful. The garlic was so strong in it that it almost tasted like it had been fermented, and it tasted great with the rice and even helped the plantains a little. I ran out of water halfway through my food and was never given a refill. When I was done with my food, I sat for a good 10 minutes while my waitress was busy elsewhere. Finally, another waiter walked by and noticed I was just sitting there. He asked if I was okay. I said yes, but that I was done with my dinner and would like to see a dessert menu. He went and got someone else, who gave me a verbal rundown of the dessert menu. I ordered the chocolate mousse, which was absolutely heavenly. Tasted like whipped brownie batter. I sat there with the empty cup for 10 or 15 more minutes before someone finally came by and asked if I was okay. I've never been to a restaurant where they don't pre-bus the tables at all and don't anticipate your needs at all (not asking for a mind reader, but it should have been obvious that I was done with my dinner and then dessert when they came over and looked at my table). I asked for the check and she brought it to me. My meal was $35. I paid and left. Food was over all not great and expensive, but maybe I just don't like Portuguese food. Service was not good. I would...
Read moreDO YOURSELF A FAVOR, DRIVE AN HOUR TO NEWARK. . This place is no long authentic Portuguese. I am Portuguese, have lived in Philadelphia area since 1975, and have been a customer of Med 2000 since this place opened. When you walk into a "Portuguese" restaurant and no one eating is Portuguese, do yourself a favor and walk out. This place was never Newark quality but when Nelson was there it was acceptable, even good at times. Since Nelson left, the place has fallen apart. Service is absolutely horrible. The Brazilian waitress has no clue what she is doing, she does not understand the menu, they don't even know how to spell the daily specials correctly. Bring back the Dominicans at least they came to your table to check on you. The service is as everyone says , completely horrendous, you almost literally have to scream to get their attention. The appetizers were good, I have to say that (you know the chorico, clams, garlic shrimp) the main staple of Portuguese appetizers, they got that right. The main dishes, just blah, no passion in that cooking, it's just blah. If I absolutely have to have Portuguese food and can't drive to Newark, TIO PEPE I guess it is, I hear John is back. What a shame, they have a decent location, some parking, and the dining room is ok. They better hope their Spanish/Brazilian cliental is enough, because you are not going to see many Portuguese people support this place any longer. Needs new management...
Read moreAfter nearly a year, my wife and I came back to Mediterranean. Although there have been some minor improvements in the decor, the food and the service keep plummeting. Our waiter was friendly but definitely is not familiar with the menu. I ordered the sautéed pork and clams and he asks me what sides I’d like with my food. Pork and Clams already comes with cubes fried potatoes mixed in the dish. The sever just looked surprised when I told him that. Despite there being only five tables, two tables that were seated after us got their appetizers and entrees before us. I guess our server either forgot to place or order or there was an issue in the kitchen because the server comes out with a plate of French fries on the house. The fries were cold and drenched in grease. Not fresh cut potato’s. They’re your typical local pizza shop fries. Our food came out. It was nice and hot and the order was right but my Pork and clams was swimming in a puddle of oil and the fried cubed potatoes were over done. Not to mention that there was a total of five clams in the entire dish. This place is becoming less and less authentic Portuguese. The menus need to be updated and the staff needs to be retrained. It’s disappointing that in a good city like Philadelphia there isn’t a decent...
