Ignore the bad reviews from uninformed consumers and jealous competitors. I have always had a great experience here despite the lower class neighborhood and slightly cheaper ingredients used. Ironically, I was a chef at high-end restaurants.
I recommend that you buy in person and not rely on delivery, which might result in leaking grease, cold food, mangled ingredients, and disappointment.
The cheesesteaks have slightly fattier steak than the best cuts and needs to be chopped into thousands of pieces in order to be made chewable due to the extra gristle present. But they are delicious nonetheless, even more so than those at many fancier joints.
The Italian rolls are fantastic. All of the cheeses used are tasty. I always get grilled onions on the side so that I can add them as desired.
The fries are scrumptious despite being pre-frozen. Most of the other food is also yummy.
I always park close to Kensington Avenue on nearby East Oakdale Street, and walk the mere half block. It is a one way street, so you will need to enter from Jasper Street, which is also one way.
The neighborhood is not the nicest but is on the way up, maybe way up to the point of gentrification. As evidence thereof, check out the beautiful U-Haul building across the street.
The service is fast and friendly. The prices are quite possibly the lowest in the city considering the gargantuan amount of food received. I always enjoy the food and, believe it or not, the ambience. I have fun on steroids. One Pound Cheesesteaks is a Philly legend for a reason.
If you navigate the back roads when I-95 is jammed, as I do, you absolutely must stop at this Philly legend.
You are not going to receive the high-end ribeye sold at the pricier steak shops like P* and T* L**. But if you like delicious blue collar food that will not break the bank, this...
Read moreI had heard of this place for a while, but I had never been. We decided to go today for the first time today. We ordered our food from the board and waited our turn. We took note that most people ordered ahead and then came and picked it up. That’s a great idea and maybe we’ll try that next time. Our food came out quick and we decided to eat at the counter outside as opposed to bringing our food home. I ordered the special which was a 2 foot cheesesteak with peppers, onions, mushrooms, and pepperoni. Was it a full pound as advertised? Probably not. However, the roll was pretty full. The roll itself, although a thinner roll than most other places use, was very fresh and delicious. The meat inside was very flavorful and seasoned perfectly. It was also very juicy as well. That is a pet peeve of mine to get a dry cheesesteak and this one was very good. This also had a good ratio of cheese to meat. However, my husband wished he had more cheese, but that’s just personal preference. The whole experience was unpretentious. They are not touting hard seeded rolls, nor are they singing the praises of Cooper Sharp cheese. It is not a fancy or fussy place or is it “instagrammable”. It is just an old-school cheesesteak being served in an old school neighborhood joint. It was satisfying, and brought us pure joy, and that’s not something that is usually said about hanging out on a corner in Kensington! We have already been discussing our next trip! I am looking forward to trying out the meatball Parm sandwich, and maybe a hamburger. My son enjoyed the chicken fingers immensely and he was also happy that you serve crinkle cut fries. Good value overall for...
Read morePlace is horrible, went there once and told Them I wanted no mayonnaise or ketchup on the sandwich as I don’t eat it, instead it was slathered with it, figured maybe because it was midnight I’d try earlier. Went back a few days later, explained what happened to the counter girl and asked that they please make sure the sandwich had nothing on it. I guess the cook and the counter girl thought it was cute that they not only put mayo but also ketchup, and she ahead the audacity to reassure me that he put nothing on it, twice they wasted my money and I won’t be giving them another chance. Edited to add details: the first order was at about 12 am, I think it was a Sunday but I could be wrong. The woman who took the order was friendly enough, told me she only works a few shifts when she can because she has a special needs daughter that requires a lot of her attention and time. The second time(I forget the day but can look at the pictures I took of all The Mayo for exact date) the second time was a younger Spanish girl, I told her my experience and at first she thought maybe her mother had taken the order but I don’t think it was…. This younger girl told me she told the cook to be sure yet somehow it wasn’t just messed up with one topping, but 2. It’s a shame. I helped Open that place back in 1990 when it was luckys, I doubt I’ll be giving it another try even though I thought there was a glimmer of hope for it being...
