I went to this place to find a good vegetarian meal and beer, which I certainly did. The brewery is located in a bit sketchy area, but most of the areas look sketchy in Philadelphia, so don't allow prejudice to keep you away. Next to the colonial houses, there will be urban & modern (trailer-like) architectural masterpieces. There is nothing else next to the brewery. But once you enter the place you will be surprised with the interior decor, beer selection & food. The interior is very interesting with mirrors in the old frames hanging from the walls, long bar and few tables here and there. Make sure to try all of their beer types ($3 for 4 oz). For those who prefer mild and/or wheat beer .- definitely go for their Dr. Double Wheater. They also have interesting stouts and IPA(s). What I loved the most is their vegetarian burger and veggie-ribs! The ribs just blue my mind away - they tasted so real that, as a vegetarian, I was hesitant to eat them. Staff is professional - no empty conversations. Bar tender asks for the order and brings you the food. Unless you are a hot chick or a handsome single guy. If you are a beer lover - stop by and have a drink. If you are a vegetarian, although the food is delicious - there are many other places in Philly...
Read moreFrequent customer even though I live in NJ. Lots of changes in the last few months, new staff, new food, new brewer!
Bancroft was a little messed up for about a year, let's be honest but I've had it recently and it's better, and the new contract brewer is working to fix the flavor and bring it back to how it was. Other beers are good, the Picasso Vermont style IPA is very bitter and I like it. Pet Pilsner is still amazing if not better and I've been buying cans.
Food: I'll miss Cali, but the new guy is very friendly and enjoys cooking for people, and the second guy doesn't speak much English but he has good vibes and he makes everything very well. Love the spicy veggie/salad apps lately. The summer Squash on special is so spicy that for me it was comparable to eating Thai som tom salad with 3 Thai chilis. Wasnt expecting that here lol maybe they need to start highlighting these items in red font
Cheers to Alex who was promoted and always seems to be there and double cheers to the Sunday night crew, Brent and...
Read moreFirst, major kudos to Second District for being arguably the most vegan friendly brewpub in Philly. 'Bout time. Food was very good. The vegan "pork rinds" are essential (though don't expect a meal out of them one could easily put away about 3 orders). Also had the tofu scramble breakfast sandwich which was good. Now to the beer... I've been anxiously waiting to taste what Ben Potts has been up to lately, and these beers certainly do not disappoint. The Oat IPA was dank, hazy, and awesome. A mild, lemony Saison brewed with Forest & Main yeast was very drinkable. The Bancroft Pale Ale was pretty much what you would expect from a sessionable pale- very crisp and goes down way too easy. Last was the collaboration Saison with Lost Abbey which was nice and peppery and highly hopped. Definitely a stand out. With all the breweries popping up in the city lately, there's certainly more choices than ever. But based on the beer, the menu, and the vibe, Second District already...
