Fantastic burrito spot in Phoenix. A leauge ahead of the many *bertos around town, while maintaining a similar price point.
I've never been to a Mexican restaurant and been impressed with the tortillas- they're always just unremarkable, edible towels you use to hold your food together. After having a Choon tortilla, I feel like I've been living a lie. It's one of those things you don't realise will have as large an impact as it does, until you try it. Big props to them for taking the time and effort to make them in house, and the tortillas alone are a good enough reason to come by.
That's not to say the tortillas are the only thing that's special here. The choice of fillings is more like what you would expect to see in a home kitchen on special occasions. No sad french fries ham-fisted in, here (looking at you, Filibertos).
The interior is large, well lit, and has looked/smelled clean every time I've been so far. The staff is friendly, and food comes out pretty quick.
My only real gripe is that there isn't much of a description on the different types of fillings. As in they only say what animal it came from and how spicy it is. I would suggest pre-googling the names of the fillings for recipes to get an idea of what's in them before coming, especially if you're not familiar with traditional Mexican cuisine. If the owners are reading this, please at least list the rough components of each burrito filling so people with food allergies can make informed decisions.
All in all, absolutely worth a trip down here, especially if you're tired of the usual burrito spots...
Read moreThe first time I tried to get food from this place I noticed they were closed early and some days didn’t open up at all. When I finally caught them open I ordered one chicken and one steak taco. I didn’t realize until I got home that they gave me 2 steak tacos and no chicken. The food tasted descent so it wasn’t a big deal. I went again and ordered 2 chicken burritos. My first bite I had to spit it out! There was a big chunk of hard gristle bone in it. I opened the tortilla and the meat looked dry with big pieces of chicken that was barely cut up. My other burrito had a chicken bone about 4 inches long. I wasted my money because these burritos were inedible an I didn’t want to choke on them. I gave the restaurant a chance twice, now I know not to trust their...
Read moreThis place was awful. Didn't smell like anything was being cooked, we were the only ones there, there was no ice tea, everything was old and in warmers.
I've been eating authentic Mexican food in southern Arizona for my entire life and I can honestly say this is the worst I've ever had. I ordered 3 Barbacoa tacos, they were completely un seasoned like boiled beef and the tortillas were raw and doughy, they don't offer rice, and the beans I had were the most flavorful thing on my plate. No chips and salsa or any other sides. You would sadly be better off eating at a chain like filibertos or literally any foodtruck on the side of the road. Terrible...
