While vegan options are becoming more plentiful in Phoenix, finding GOOD and reasonably priced vegan options is still somewhat an anomaly. Dark Hall puts care an attention into what they offer. Their employees are nice and have excellent customer service.
I purchased three pastries during my visit. 1) The plum cake was moist and not too sweet. The jam was made in house and they were not stingy with it at all. 2) The blueberry and basil galette was perfect. The pastry itself was just what you would want to complement the amazing pairing of the blueberry jam (also made in house) and the basil which appeared both fresh and infused in sugar. 3) The earl grey macaron unfortunately I felt was too sweet. I had a hard time getting the flavor over the (what seemed to be) shortening based icing in the middle. I would have preferred a thin layer of jam instead. However the texture was just like I remember from before I went vegan so in that regard alone they get full points.
I ordered a large cold brew with cashew milk. The size was relative to many other coffee shops, and at around $4/4.50 is what you would expect from a higher end coffee shop. At first I didn’t like the coffee, it tasted almost sour/burnt on first try. However, having been sipping it for about a half hour the flavor has mellowed out and I’m a big fan. The cashew milk itself doesn’t particularly come through. Cashews themselves being relatively mild I’m not surprised. I do enjoy that it is made in house as well though.
Definitely, 100% would recommend anyone trying Dark Hall. Particularly in the morning as it was quiet and cozy. I would have loved to have stayed to enjoy my breakfast there.
P.S. to the individual who gave them one star for not having carb/sugar free options...it’s a bakery. What did you expect? Also there’s absolutely nothing wrong with...
Read moreAfter seeing this place on social media(probably like most of you reading) I was excited to visit. Both my wife and I are covered in tattoos head to toe with skulls and such and the vibes this place seemed to give off online seemed more welcoming compared to the local Starbucks. When we got here, it was packed seating inside, which seemed to us to be a good sign. After waiting at the counter for a bit(probably a few minutes, not more than like 5), we were met with a cashier! :) total time from getting to the counter to paying was close to 8 minutes.
we ordered, normal routine, but when asked for milk, I asked for regular(I did not know it was vegan only at this time) the person who was taking our order informed me that they don’t do that, and had an attitude about it. As we finished the order the customer service switch was completely shut off and they began to already shift gears to other things.(it was not busy, and all items seemed stocked) but I’ve worked coffee before so I extended patience even though it was a weird transition.
We got the chai, a sugar cookie drink, and the chocolate skull cake. The chai had little to no milk(oat) the sugar cookie wasn’t really anything more than a vanilla latte with a cookie crumble on top and the cake wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t good. We had high hopes. Our expectations may not have been met, but that doesn’t mean yours won’t! Give the place a try. Maybe we caught them on an off day. We are going to give this place another shot later on next month in hopes to have a better...
Read moreJust getting off a grave shift and looking ahead to a busy day, I needed coffee ASAP. I knew there was a Starbucks right by my house, but I saw the tiny sign for Dark Hall Coffee right as I was about to pull in to the drive through and decided to check it out. I got a medium iced chai for my sister and an iced mocha for myself (accidentally asked for whole milk, not realizing it was vegan). I also ordered the Blackberry crumble and the chocolate banana cake.
Let me tell you, as I was sitting there waiting for my drinks, I slowly realized that the macaroons were vegan too. I'm a Baker, so that idea blew my mind and I had to ask how they make it. The barista was so excited to share their secret with me. You can see the pride in their workmanship when her eyes got big and sparkly as she explained the process to make chickpeas resemble a meringue.
Sadly, my sister sister didn't like her chai, but I thought my mocha was decent enough. I have nothing against Starbucks, but I never order a mocha from there because it's not good. This mocha, however, was good enough that I'd order again.
The pastries, honey! The pastries were DEVINE! I split both in half so my sister and I could sample both. We both loved the Blackberry crumble. It was so soft and moist and the top was crunchy and flavorful. Unfortunately for my sister though, I did not share my chocolate banana cake with her. How could I? It was rich and decadent, AND I ate it in one bite! I regret nothing!
I love Dark Hall and will be coming back to...
