O. M. G. This place! Out of the three concepts here, this was not even on my radar. My mistake! I threw together a last minute birthday party, and really wanted to get a reservation at Undertow, but because of my poor planning, my birthday was even better than I could have thought it would be. The only bar available for my party of 10 was the Grey Hen so I went to test it out and promptly made the reservation. The host made it easy and our bartender, I believe his name is Alec, was a real gem! We rented out half of the bar, and with 10 people it was a little tight but it was nice because everyone could mingle and chat. The bartender is seriously amazing. The drinks are a little intimidating at first with strange ingredients, and mixtures, but it is apothecary themed, so buckle up! My recommendation is to talk to the bartender about what you like and don't like, because he will know exactly what ails you and how to fix it! My group ordered nearly every drink on the menu and many were delightful little palate parties! If you like an adventure and a little mystery, you cannot go wrong here! I'm so glad I had the opportunity to finally try this place! Thank you! You made my birthday unforgettable and it was a real hit...
Read morelast weekend i decided to treat myself. my wife had recently died from cholera and in the same week my only son was shot dead in the street during an aviary dispute. i don’t have to tell you that i was in much dismay and needing reprieve from this cruel old world. i jumped a train at random and ate pills until i went to sleep. once i awoke i realized where the train had taken me. it was new orleans! my favorite old town! i was so happy to be there. for sure this was the place to forget my dead family. i walked onto the first bug filled patio i found and relieved myself. it happened to be the grey hen and boy was i in luck. i threw down my last “captain montgomery” nickel from the war and asked for a “heavy one”. i can tell you they did not disappoint. they were pharmacists, so i trusted them whole heartedly, and i told them i needed something for me and my family of ghosts. i’m not sure if it was the flashing street lights or the bug sounds coming from speakers, but i held my little girls hand one more time and i don’t care what nobody says. that old tyrant jim lancaster better stay outta that area and leave those good people alone, cuz i don’t got much to live for any more and. might...
Read moreIronically this was the last of the Century Grand bars that I have visited and I was expecting the experience to be subpar in comparison to Undertow and Platform 18. I'm not sure why I had this bias going in, but I assume it's because the other two were just so amazing that I couldn't imagine this holding a candle to it.
Of course, I was completely wrong and not only were the cocktails amazing, the service was superb. The bartender / mixologist who helped us was incredibly knowledgeable about not only the drinks, but also the history and story that this New Orleans themed speak easy was portraying.
Every drink was fantastic and the ambiance was to die for. I ended up getting the $60 drink and it was absolutely delectable - I only ordered it after trying Undertow's premier Cocktail and was blown away by the presentation and generous pour.
If you are a fan of Whiskeys, they have an incredibly extensive tasting menu at different price points.
My one minor complaint was that there was an incredibly loud (perhaps slightly drunk) party waiting to be seated for what felt like ages that was a slight downer on the experience, it would have been nice if the staff had asked them to...
